March 8, 2006 - Hastings College to host History Day competition

Hastings College will host the National History Day district competition, Friday, March 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Fleharty Educational Center, Osborne Family Sports Complex, 800 E. 12th St. This is the 25th year the college has hosted the competition. The public is invited to view the projects and watch the presentations. A total of 123 junior and senior high school students from a 17-county area will compete. Six schools submitted 61 entries following the 2006 theme: “Taking a Stand in History: People, Ideas, Events.” Schools participating include: Blue Hill High School, Doniphan-Trumbull Elementary School, Doniphan-Trumbull Junior/Senior High School, Hastings Middle School, Lawrence/Nelson Junior/Senior High School, and Hastings St. Cecilia Junior/Senior High School. Winners will advance to state competition at Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln, Neb., Saturday, April 22. National competition will take place at the University of Maryland, College Park, Md., June 11-15. District coordinators for the event are Dr. Renee Laegreid, assistant professor of history, Dr. Rob Babock, professor of history, and Dr. Glenn Avent, assistant professor of history.
