Hollywood Pinafore was originally presented on Broadway in the spring of 1945, directed by Kaufman, with music by Sir Arthur Sullivan. A hit at that time, the script was forgotten until recently rediscovered. With loving respect for what makes Gilbert and Sullivan's classic operetta H.M.S. Pinafore a masterpiece, Kaufman's dazzling lyric writing transplants the maritime world of the original Pinafore to the Californian milieu he knows best: the glamorous world of Hollywood film making. All the while, he keeps Sullivan's charming musical score intact, complete with all the favorites from the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta.
Hollywood Pinafore is directed by Dr. Fritz Mountford, associate professor of music, who also plays the role of Joseph Porter. Musical director is Charles Smith, associate professor of music.
