January 5, 2006 - Hastings College to observe Martin Luther King, Jr., Day

    Hastings College will observe Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, Monday, Jan. 16, with two guest speakers and a community service project. The presentations are open to the public.     At 10:45 a.m., Francisco “Paco” Diaz ’93, Kansas City, Mo., will speak in French Memorial Chapel. Diaz was an early member of the Minority Student Union (now Multicultural Student Union). He works for Enterprise Bank and Trust and is involved in numerous community activities. Diaz serves on the city planning commission and is a member of the Kansas City Chapter of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs.     The Rev. Dr. Wayne Reynolds, an African-American pastor who serves Grace United Methodist Church in Lincoln, Neb., will deliver a sermon at a 7 p.m. in French Memorial Chapel.

    Students, faculty and staff will be participating in a service project following the theme “Keep the Dream Alive - Pass the Peace.” At approximately 1:15 p.m., and again at 3:30 p.m., teams of volunteers will march within specific locations (schools and businesses) to spread Dr. King’s message of peace, justice, and equality. Participants will pass out commemorative stickers printed with King’s messages. Kim Graviette, director of Career Services, is coordinating the service project.
