December 2, 2005 - Hastings College junior Keian Kirkegaard named Creigh Weyer Scholar

   Hastings College junior Keian A. Kirkegaard has been named the first Creigh Weyer Scholar by the Creigh Family Foundation. This highly-selective, post-graduate scholarship, is offered to Hastings College juniors who have outstanding leadership potential.     Kirkegaard, son of Donald and Deborah Kirkegaard, is a physics and mathematics major. He plans to pursue a career in technology research and development. An Eagle Scout, Kirkegaard has a 4.0 cumulative grade point average, has acted in theatre productions, and is a member of Alpha Chi academic honor society. He was named outstanding Alpha Chi sophomore last spring and as a freshman received the Dr. Harry R. James Physics Award.      The Creigh Weyer Scholarship offers up to $40,000 in grants to support graduate study in any field in the United States or overseas, as well as active mentoring, guidance and support from senior leaders in business, government and academia.  Creigh Weyer Scholars are selected on the following criteria:·          Demonstrated leadership potential;·          High probability of becoming a leader who will have a substantial impact on his or her community;·          Highest ethical standards and integrity;·          Strong communication skills; and·          Strong academic record with likely acceptance by a first-rate graduate school.    Other finalists for the Creigh Weyer Scholarship were:·          Joshua D. Fangmeier, son of David and Debra Fangmeier, is a political science and history major planning to pursue a law degree and a career in public policy. He is active in campus political organizations, student governance organizations and academic honorary societies. ·          Benjamin F. Klug, son of Richard and Pamela Klug, is majoring in biology and plans to attend medical school. He has been a starter on the football team for three years.  ·          Nicole J. Thomas, daughter of Daniel and Diana Thomas, is majoring in media production and plans to continue with graduate work in journalism to prepare for a career in broadcast journalism. She has been an editor for the Collegian newspaper, a director of the campus television station, and interned at an NBC affiliate television station. ·          Richard “Seth” Torpin, son of Richard and Susan Torpin, is a history and political science major. He plans to pursue a graduate degree in history and teach at the collegiate level. He has been active in various music activities and was an editorial columnist for the Collegian newspaper.
