November 23, 2005 - Hastings College to recognize World AIDS Day

The Hastings College PHIVE-O (Peer HIV Education Organization) will observe World AIDS Day, Wednesday, Nov. 30, and Thursday, Dec. 1.  World AIDS Day was founded in 1988. Events are free and open to the public.     Contact Judy Sandeen, director of campus health services, at (402) 461-7372, for more information regarding the events.     Wednesday at 10 a.m., an HIV/AIDS chapel service will be held in French Memorial Chapel. Rev. Jay Vetter, senior pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island, Neb., will speak, and pianist Dr. Jonathan Sokasits, associate professor of music, will provide special music.     Thursday at 12 p.m. in French Memorial Chapel, a member of the Hastings community will discuss what it is like to live with HIV/AIDS.    A candlelight vigil will take place Thursday at 8 p.m., also in French Memorial Chapel. The vigil will feature readings, music, and the opportunity for responses from members of the audience. The entryway of the chapel will be lined with red luminaria with the first names of those who have died from HIV/AIDS in Central Nebraska.     PHIVE-O will also conduct a “Cents-able Gifts for NAP” (Nebraska AIDS Project) in cooperation with Russ’s Market in Hastings. Shoppers can purchase pre-filled bags of non-perishable items, Thursday-Sunday, Dec. 1-4, that will be donated to NAP.

PHIVE-O will also be handing out red ribbons and AIDS information sheets at college athletic events.
