November 7, 2005 - HC students observe Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

    Hastings College students will have the opportunity to make a difference during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Monday-Wednesday, Nov. 14-16, through a variety of events.     Sophomores Molly Ericson and Melissa Theesen are co-chairing student activities.  Faculty and staff sponsors are Rev. Dr. M. Jean Heriot, associate director of vocational discernment and service learning, and Mary Stoops, spiritual life advocate.      Other students involved are: Chelsea LeMar, Christina Luster, Lindsey Luttrell, and Jeff Richards.

    Events include: Day One – Awareness, Monday, November 14, 12-1 p.m., Hazelrigg Student Union     Acquire facts about poverty in the United States and around the globe, and learn about the ONE Campaign. If interested, sign a pledge supporting the ONE Campaign’s call for the nation to address needs of those living in poverty.  More information about the ONE Campaign is available at www.one.org. Information, pledge cards, and a video about the ONE Campaign will be shown in Hazelrigg Student Union. Day Two, Advocacy, Tuesday, November 15, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.,  Alumni Room, Daugherty Center    A call center will be set up for students, faculty, staff, and interested community members to phone elected officials regarding concerns for those, especially children, living in poverty.     At the same location, volunteers can assist with the assembly of 400 sack lunches for the Open Table, an ecumenical food ministry within the Hastings community that works to feed the hungry. Members of the Hastings College Religious Programs Committee, Sodexho, and the YWCA will provide supplies for the lunches.     A “One Campus, One Community” luncheon will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., focusing on children and poverty. Dr. Jean Chicoine, program specialist for the Nebraska Homeless Assistance Program, Nebraska State Department of Health and Humans Services, will address, “Children in Poverty: Food Insecurity and Homelessness.” The luncheon will take place in Hazelrigg Student Union, Rooms A and B. The event is funded by the Vocation and Values Program, made possible by a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. Day Three, Action, Wednesday, November 16, 10 a.m., French Memorial Chapel   The chapel band and various students will reflect on Jesus’ call to serve others and share their experiences of working among and with individuals living in poverty.  At the close of chapel, the congregation will be invited to fast until dinner to deepen the awareness of those who live with the daily reality of hunger and their own need for God’s sustenance.   Swipe, Skip, and Serve – for Hastings College students who swipe their Sodexho meal cards and then skip lunch, Sodexho will donate $1 and Dr. Phillip Dudley, college president, will donate $2 toward agencies in Hastings that serve the needs of

at-risk children. Additional monetary donations will be collected in Hazelrigg Student Union and Hurley-McDonald Administration Building.

   Break the Fast – those who fast at lunch are invited to gather in prayer before the Thanksgiving meal at Hazelrigg Student Union dining room.   Student volunteers: Molly Ericson, sophomore, Becky Ericson/Ray Ericson, Boulder, Colo.
