October 26, 2005 - Hastings College to host Irish duo

Hastings College will host Matt and Shannon Heaton, a husband and wife duo from Boston, Mass., who will present an evening of Irish music, Friday, Nov. 4, at 8 p.m. in Perkins Auditorium, Fuhr Hall of Music. The concert is free and the public is invited to attend. Matt plays the guitar and Shannon plays the Irish flute and whistle, and sings. The couple, who has performed together since 1991, has produced three CDs and comprise two-thirds of the group Siucra. According to the Boston Globe, “The music is pulsing and vibrant, yet warmly embraces the sweet simplicity of classic Irish melody and lyric sentiment.” Samples of the Heatons’ music from their CD “Dearga,” can be found at www.EatsRecords.com. Matt, a long-time devotee of Irish music, began fiddle studies with Joan Hanrahan in Clare, and in addition to his work with Irish traditional outfits, has played electric with Chicago groups, studied classical guitar in Italy, and led the tango group “Orquesta Atipica.” Shannon’s easy rhythmic style has been heard all over North America and Ireland. She has a keen ear for music and languages, and is one of only a few Irish musicians who speaks Thai.
