September 28, 2005 - 55th Melody Round-up Parade set for October 8

(Hastings, Neb.)  The 55th annual Hastings College Melody Round-up Parade will begin at 12 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8. The parade will follow the college’s Homecoming/Family Weekend theme “History in the Making: Celebrating 123 Years.”                 The parade will include marching bands, floats by Hastings College organizations, antique and classic cars, and the 2005 Hastings College Homecoming royalty. Grand marshal for the parade will be Lt. Governor Rick Sheehy.                 The color guard will be provided by Hastings American Legion Post #11 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1346.                 The parade will begin at the intersection of 4th Street and Colorado Avenue, then proceed west on 4th Street to Lincoln Avenue; south on Lincoln Avenue to 2nd Street; and east on 2nd Street to Kansas Avenue.                 In addition to the Hastings College marching bands, 21 high school and junior high school bands will participate in the parade including: Adams Central High School, Blue Hill High School, Clay Center Junior Senior High School, Columbus Scotus High School, Deshler High School, Doniphan-Trumbull Junior High School, Doniphan-Trumbull High School, Exeter-Milligan Junior High School, Gibbon High School, Giltner High School, Harvard High School, Hastings High School, Hastings St. Cecilia High School, Kenesaw High School, Red Cloud High School, Sandy Creek High School, Shelby High School, Shickley High School, Sutherland Junior Senior High School, Southwest Middle/High School, and Valentine Middle School.                 During the parade, bands will be evaluated by a panel of judges and awarded divisional ratings. Three awards will be presented: Outstanding Drum Major (chosen from among all bands), Outstanding Auxiliary/Flag Corps (in two classes), and Outstanding Band (in five classes.)  Winners will receive awards during a special presentation at 1:15 p.m. at Dutton-Lainson Plaza, 2nd Street and St. Joseph Avenue.                Judges for the marching band competition are Lonnie Kitterer, Johnson Lake, Neb.; Caleb Johnson, Ogallala, Neb.; and Dale Duensing, Hastings, Neb.                Corporate sponsors for the parade include: Big G Stores, Five Points Bank of Hastings, Idea Bank Marketing, Sherry’s Cards & Gifts/Hometown Variety & Crafts, Moore Music Company, Dutton-Lainson Company, Heritage Bank, and Hastings Business Improvement District. Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). A total of 61 majors in 32 areas of study and 12 pre-professional programs are offered. The college was cited among top liberal arts colleges, national bachelor’s category, in U.S.News and World Report, America’s Best Colleges 2006, and was listed as a Best Midwestern College by The Princeton Review 2006.
