2005 - 2006 Releases

September 16, 2005 -- Hastings College to host African Phoenix Ensemble

Hastings College will host African Phoenix Ensemble, a high energy, 10-man, a cappella group from South Africa. The group, on their third American tour, will perform Wednesday, Sept. 21. They will be part of the 10 a.m. chapel service and perform in a free concert at 8 p.m. Both performances will be in French Memorial Chapel. The African Phoenix Ensemble, part of the Thula Sizwe tour, will present traditional African harmony and dance, mostly Zulu rhythms. Thula Sizwe, which means hush and listen, is from Soshanguve township outside Pretoria. Established in 1986, the group’s leader, Abel Dlamini, founded the ensemble to preserve the Zulu culture in the form of music, dance and costume. Thula Sizwe has composed more than 30 songs, most of which have been recorded on five CDs, and have performed hundreds of concerts in South Africa. They are ambassadors of peace, development, reconciliation and culture for South Africa.
