August 29, 2005 - Hastings College reports record first-day enrollment

Hastings, Neb., August 29, 2005 -- Classes began Monday, Aug. 29, at Hastings College with an enrollment of 1,176, reflecting an increase of 30 full-time students and a total enrollment increase of 23 compared to 2004. This head count marks an all-time high for the college. Official enrollment figures will be tabulated Oct. 1.
The unofficial, first-day count includes full-time and part-time students and master of arts in teaching students. Nine Mary Lanning/Creighton University nursing students who take liberal arts courses at Hastings College and four international exchange students are not included in the enrollment figures. Four Central Community College students taking education courses are not included in the count either.
This year’s incoming freshmen class of 313, second largest in the college’s history, includes 19 valedictorians and salutatorians. ACT scores of the first-year students average 23.5 points.
In addition to first-year students, Hastings College enrolled 44 students who transferred from other institutions.
Seventy-two percent of new students are from Nebraska. Other states represented are: Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Texas, Wyoming, South Dakota, Utah, Oklahoma and Vermont. The class also includes six foreign students from Romania, Ireland, Germany, and Canada.
Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). A total of 61 majors in 32 areas of study and 12 pre-professional programs are offered. The college was cited among top liberal arts colleges, national bachelor’s category, in U.S.News and World Report, America’s Best Colleges 2006, and was listed as a Best Midwestern College by The Princeton Review 2006.
