August 24, 2005 - Hastings College New Student Days August 26-28

Hastings, Neb., August 24, 2005 -- Hastings College is expecting more than 366 incoming students on campus, Aug. 26-28, during annual New Student Days (NSD) orientation. Fall semester classes begin Monday, Aug. 29.

Activities following the theme “Infinite Opportunities” were planned by a student committee chaired by seniors Kate Hartline, daughter of David and Susan Hartline, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; and Landon Haack, son of Gary and Pamela Haack, Dix, Neb.; in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs and advisor Joan McCarthy, associate dean of students.
Other students on the planning team include: Tyler Prochazka, sophomore, daughter of John and Robyn Prochazka, Hemingford, Neb.; Valerie Sweley, sophomore, daughter of Roger and Debra Sweley, Grand Island, Neb., Sarah Schumacher, junior, daughter of James and Susan Schumacher, Delaware, Ohio; and Thomas Kluver, junior, son of Stephen and Suzanne Kluver, Fairfield, Neb.
New students who have not been on campus for athletics and other activities will begin moving into residence halls Friday morning, Aug. 26.
At 3 p.m., Friday, a Welcoming Convocation will be held in Lynn Farrell Arena. Dr. Phil Dudley, president of the college; Dr. Rich Lloyd, academic dean; Gretchen Vondrak, board of trustee member; Uzo Akotaobi, senior, president of Student Association (son of Godwill and Lily Akotaobi, Thornton, Colo.); NSD co-chairs and other college personnel will greet new students and their parents. The Hastings College Band, under the direction of Dr. Daniel Schmidt, will perform; and the Hastings College Choir, directed by Dr. Fritz Mountford, will sing.
At 9 p.m., students will attend a keynote presentation “The Ultimate Road Trip: Campus2Career” sponsored by the Monster organization. Students will hear tips on how to have a successful first year of college and be given confidence-building advice. The presentation will be in French Memorial Chapel.
Saturday morning, Aug. 27, students and their advisors will gather for the annual community service project. From 8:30 to 11 a.m., students will volunteer their time and effort at Good Samaritan Village, Adams County Historical Society, Hastings Museum, Alcott Elementary School, and Hastings Parks and Recreation. Music majors will perform at The Kensington and The Homestead.
Parents will be attending a morning orientation session and participate in a panel discussion led by parents on the Parents Advisory Council.
Weekend events also include football and volleyball scrimmages, campus tours, a student organization fair, a buffet at the home of President Dudley, a dance, a Sunday morning ecumenical church service, an on-campus picnic, and meetings with residence hall assistants.
Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). A total of 61 majors in 32 areas of study and 12 pre-professional programs are offered to 1,153 students. The college was cited among the top liberal arts colleges, national bachelor’s category, in U.S.News & World Report, America’s Best Colleges 2006, and was listed as a Best Midwestern College by The Princeton Review 2006.
