August 17, 2005 - Hastings College to host Gene Stallings…former Alabama coach

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hastings, Neb., August 17, 2005 -- Hastings College will host former University of Alabama head football coach Gene Stallings, who will address “Stories from Another Season,” Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 8 p.m. in French Memorial Chapel. An inspiration as a coach and father, Stallings will reflect on his coaching career and his work with children with disabilities.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Stallings was named head coach of the Crimson Tide in 1990, and in seven years, guided the team to a national championship, four SEC Western Division titles, and six post-season bowl appearances. One of legendary Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s favorite-coaching sons, Stallings’ coaching record stands at 70-16-1. He also was head coach at Texas A&M and for the St. Louis and Phoenix Cardinals.

Stallings retired from coaching following the 1996 season, and now is a major contributor to the Tuscaloosa RISE program, formerly called Rural Infant Stimulation Environment, which helps children with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities.

A son, Johnny, born with Down syndrome and now in his 30s, profoundly changed the course of Stallings’ life. During an era when children with disabilities were institutionalized because they were “different,” the Stallings family was committed to keeping and raising their child as part of their family. In his book, Another Season, Stallings tells of the joy and heartbreak of raising a child with Down syndrome. In 1991, his family was honored as Family of the Year by the Tuscaloosa Association of Retarded Citizens.

The RISE Center in Tuscaloosa is named the Stallings Center in honor of the countless hours of work and support provided by Stalling and his wife, Ruth Ann. Stallings’ visit is sponsored by the Vocation and Values Program, funded by a grant through Lilly Endowment Inc.
