May 11, 2007 - Twenty-six Hastings College seniors honored, Bronco winner announced

Hastings College senior Aaron Lauer, Ainsworth, Neb., was named winner of the 2007 Bronco Award today at the annual Honors Convocation ceremony. The Bronco Award, established in 1924 by the editors of the Bronco yearbook, is the highest, non-academic honor Hastings College bestows.


 In addition to Lauer, 25 seniors received the Who’s Who Award. This award, instituted at Hastings College in 1940, is presented to no more than 10 percent of the senior class.  Students were recommended by a vote of the student body. A committee of faculty and administration and three members of the junior class made the final selection. Citizenship and contributions to the overall college program were considered.

Aaron Lauer, son of James and Deborah Lauer, Ainsworth, Neb., majored in political science and history. He was a member of Hastings College Republicans, Phi Alpha Theta history honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, and was a Student Association liaison to the Board of Trustees. He was a member of Hastings College Choir, Alliance, and wrote for the Collegian newspaper. Lauer was a Homecoming candidate, presented at Academic Showcase Day, and was involved with Life-sized Candyland.


Debrenee Adkisson, daughter of Jim and Renee Adkisson, Ainsworth, Neb., majored in German. She was vice president of Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, was secretary of Sigma Tau Delta English honor society, and a member of Alpha Chi academic honor society. Adkisson served on the National Women’s History Month planning committee, was a land leader for Life-sized Candyland, was a student Rerum Scriptor editor, was on the review board for Spectrum literary magazine, and received the Arthur and Eunice Langvardt Scholarship in English. 


  Celeste Bauer, daughter of Crale and Jill Bauer, Alma, Neb., majored in advertising and marketing. An outside hitter for the volleyball team, she was named an NAIA Academic All-American, named to the NAIA All-Region 1st Team, and named GPAC (Great Plains Athletic Conference) Player of the Year. As a junior, Bauer was nominated for the prestigious A.O. Duer Award which recognizes character, scholarship and volleyball playing ability. Bauer was an executive council member of Phi Beta Lambda business club and was vice president of Chi Omega Psi social sorority. She was a volunteer for TeamMates, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the YMCA, and was a youth volleyball leader.


  Brian Bonn, son of Donna Prete, Lone Tree, Colo., majored in communication. A member of Student Association Executive Council, Bonn participated in Hastings College Choir, Men’s Choir, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He was a member of Society of Collegiate Journalists and wrote for the Collegian newspaper. A residence director, Bonn served on the Residence Hall Council. Bonn worked with HCTV 6, HCworldnews.com, and KFKX radio station. He was historian for Alpha Psi Omega theatre honor society and was awarded a White Mask and Scarlet Mask for his contributions to theatre. He was a Homecoming candidate and played baseball and golf. Bonn received the Lloyd S. and Helen M. Jones Scholarship.


  Jessica Brock, daughter of Craig and Bonnie Brock, Bertrand, Neb., majored in human services administration. A member of the Hastings College forensics team, she was an American Forensics Association national qualifier. Brock was a member of Phi Kappa Delta forensic honor society, was a Hastings College Player (theatre), and was a member of Alpha Psi Omega theatre honor society where she was awarded a Scarlet Mask. A cheerleader, Brock was a Student Alumni Ambassador, a member of Campus Crusade, Ignite, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Artists’ Guild, and Hastings College Singers. Brock worked with HCTV 6 and volunteered with the American Red Cross, the United Way, YWCA and the Adams County Historical Society. Brock was awarded the Hal Shiffler Scholarship.


  Brandon Diamond, son of Theresa Locke and Stephen Diamond, Independence, Mo., majored in theatre arts. A member of Student Association Executive Council, he was a member of the track team and holds the long jump record. Diamond participated in Men’s Choir, sang in the Messiah Chorus, was Homecoming king, and worked for KFKX radio station.


  Christopher Dobbins, son of Jeffrey and Janet Dobbins, Grand Island, Neb., majored in instrumental music (7-12). Named 2006-07 Theodore Presser Scholar, Dobbins was a member of Hastings College Band, Hastings College Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Men’s Choir, and sang in the Messiah Chorus. He participated in theatre and was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society.


  Elizabeth Eager, son of Jack and Carol Eager, Ashland, Neb., majored in psychology. A member of Public Relations Council, she was a Student Alumni Ambassador, a member of Common Grounds fellowship group, and treasurer of Hastings College Child Defenders. Eager was entertainment anchor for HCTV 6 and a journalist for HCworldnews.com. She was a member of Crimson Spirit Dance Team and received a Scarlet Mask for her involvement in theatre. Eager was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Alpha Psi Omega theatre honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, SPAM (Students Promoting Active Mental Health), and Local Global Community. She was service event coordinator for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, was on the Religion in Life committee, wrote poetry for Spectrum literary magazine, and presented at Academic Showcase Day. Eager taught at T’Dance Studio.


  Renee Faimon, daughter of Russell and Donna Faimon, Lawrence, Neb., majored in business administration and business education. She was captain of the volleyball team and was named an NAIA All-American, named to 1st Team All-Conference, and selected for 2nd Team All-Region. She holds national and school records. Faimon was captain of the track team and an NAIA All-American track athlete. She was a member of Chi Omega Psi social sorority, Phi Beta Lambda business club, Student Education Association, was a student senator, and member of the Public Relations Council. Faimon was a youth volleyball volunteer for the YMCA and a volunteer track coach for Blue Hill Public School.


  Joshua Fangmeier, son of David and Debra Fangmeier, Hebron, Neb., majored in political science. He was a student senator, president of Alpha Chi academic honor society, and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, College Republicans, Phi Alpha Theta history honor society, and Omicron Delta Epsilon economics honor society. Fangmeier was in Men’s Choir, participated in Academic Showcase Day, and served on the Artist Lecture Series committee. He received the Holyoke-McKeag Award for Excellence in Political Science and Economics, was 2nd vice-chair of Nebraska Federation of College Republicans, volunteered for the Burling for Legislature and Smith for Congress campaigns, and interned at the Nebraska State Attorney General's Office.


  Emily Hogan, daughter of Elizabeth Saunders and Ronald Hogan, Aurora, Colo., majored in media production. She was president and pledge trainer for Alpha Omega social sorority; was a leadership member for Ignite; and was a producer, ad manager and anchor for HCTV 6 where she received a Golden Leaf Award. Hogan was a member of Student Alumni Ambassador and a member of the Society of Collegiate Journalists. She was ad manager for the Collegian newspaper and a reporter for Hcworldnews.com. A Homecoming candidate, Hogan also participated in Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, Phi Beta Lambda business club, and Inter-Greek Council.


  Keian Kirkegaard, son of Donald and Deborah Kirkegaard, Centennial, Colo., majored in physics. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, Alpha Chi academic honor society (named Outstanding Second-Year Male), and was a student senator. He participated in theatre and was a leader for Life-sized Candyland. Kirkegaard received the Creigh-Weyer Scholarship, Walter Scott Scholarship, Harry R. James Physics Scholarship, Madgett Physics Scholarship, and was awarded a NASA Nebraska Space Grant Scholarship.


  Thomas Kluver, son of Stephen and Suzanne Kluver, Fairfield, Neb., majored in English and media production. He was vice president of Student Association and was a member of Public Relations Council. Kluver was a member of Sigma Tau Delta social fraternity, Alpha Chi academic honor society (Outstanding First-Year Male), Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Hastings College Handbell Choir, and Hastings College Choir. He was on the New Student Days planning committee, participated in forensics and was named Pi Kappa Delta forensic honor society outstanding freshman. Kluver was a youth group sponsor at First Presbyterian Church.


  Chelsea LeMar, daughter of Audrey Rogers, Westminster, Colo., and Stephen LeMar, Ralston, Neb., majored in English and political science. She was a member of Alpha Phi Sigma social sorority, CARE (College Acquaintance Rape Educators), SOAR (Student Outreach and Advocacy Resources), Sigma Tau Delta English honor society, and was a Student Alumni Ambassador. LeMar was president of Child Defenders, was a student senator, and served on the student affairs committee for Student Association. She worked with Homelessness and Hunger Awareness Week and participated in the Local and Global Community. LeMar was a residence assistant, was a member of Common Grounds fellowship organization, and received an Imagine Grant to write a leadership program for children in India.


  Lindsey Luttrell, daughter of Alan and Janet Luttrell, Pratt, Kan., majored in religion and studio art. She was Student Association secretary and page editor and staff writer for the Collegian newspaper. Luttrell was co-editor of Spectrum literary magazine and historian for Alpha Chi academic honor society. She was a member of Artists’ Guild, Common Grounds fellowship organization, and served on chapel committee. Luttrell participated in theatre, was a residence assistant, and was a Taylor Hall member-at-large. She was on the committee for Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week and was a youth group sponsor at First Presbyterian Church.


  Tiffany Mayland, daughter of Richard and Denise Mayland, Alliance, Neb., majored in biopsychology. She served as secretary and president of Alpha Phi Sigma social sorority and was a member of Alpha Chi academic honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, and Psi Chi psychology honor society. A member of Student Association, Mayland served on the special events committee. She was a member of the Public Relations Council and a member of PHIVE-O (Peer HIV Education Organization). She served on the Hastings Family Planning Board and volunteered with the Hastings Literacy Program and Head Start Child and Family Development Program.


  Timothy Moore, son of Paul and Rebecca Moore, Wichita Falls, Texas, majored in religion and media. He was co-founder of Ignite and a member of SOAR (Student Outreach and Advocacy Resources) and CHASE ministry organization. A member of Beta Chi social fraternity, Moore was on the leadership team for Campus Crusade and a residence assistant. A Homecoming candidate, Moore was a cameraman for HCTV 6 and graphics editor for HCworldnews.com. He received a Golden Leaf Award for his work in media. Moore was youth director for Westminster Presbyterian Church and participated in a mission trip to East Asia and a spring break trip to Louisiana for Hurricane Katrina Relief.


  Danny Nicklin, son of Donald and Rhonda Nicklin, Papillion, Neb., majored in media production. A member of Student Association, he was a student senator representing Altman Hall and communication arts. He was editor-in-chief, news editor and Cub and Veteran of the Year for the Collegian newspaper. Nicklin was co-chair and a committee member of the Artist Lecture Series, president of Society of Collegiate Journalists, and community service representative, pledge trainer and special events chair for Beta Chi social fraternity.  He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, worked with KFKX radio, was a member of SOAR (Student Outreach and Advocacy Resources), and published the CABE (Communication, Arts Business, Economics) Department newsletter. Nicklin won Golden Leaf Awards and organized college hurricane relief coverage. He interned for the Hastings Tribune and was a project manager for the Minnesota Thunder/Lightening Soccer Club.


  Anita Olson, daughter of Milton and Carol Olson, Ericson, Neb., majored in biology. She was a Student Alumni Ambassador and a member of the Hastings College Band. Olson participated in Ignite, Campus Crusade and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A founding member of LIFE, she was vice president of Alpha Chi academic honor society. She tutored and was a lab assistant for the chemistry and biology departments and volunteered at the Pet Connection.


  Jeana Ott, daughter of Carol Ott, Henderson, Neb., majored in business administration and communications. She was president of Student Alumni Ambassadors, historian of Omicron Delta Epsilon economics honor society, and a member of Public Relations Council. She participated in Outdoor Club, Campus Crusade, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and was co-chair of the entertainment committee and a member of executive council for Student Association. She was an anchor for HCTV 6 and a cheerleader. She served on the Bronco Village Apartment board and completed an internship at Cornerstone Bank.


  Ann Packard, daughter of Paul and Karen Packard, Longmont, Colo., majored in biology. She was vice president of Beta Beta Beta biological honor society, president of SHAC (Student Health Advisory Council), president of SPAM (Students Promoting Active Mental Health), vice president of American Chemical Society Student Affiliate, and vice president of Pre-Health Professions Club. She was a member of Alpha Chi academic honor society and Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society. Packard was fund-raising coordinator of Chi Omega Psi social sorority and participated in volleyball. She presented at the Nebraska Academy of Sciences, received a NASA Space grant, and received a fellowship at the University of Utah, College of Pharmacology. She worked with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, was a board member for HIV/AIDS Dinner, and was an American Red Cross and an emergency room volunteer. Packard also was a volleyball coach at Hastings St. Cecilia School.  


 Paige Prochazka, daughter of Dudley and Robyn Prochazka, Hemingford, Neb., majored in marketing and media production. She was secretary and sophomore representative of Public Relations Council. Prochazka was secretary of Phi Beta Lambda business club and was a member of Alpha Phi Sigma social sorority. She participated in Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, Society of Collegiate Journalists, and was advertising manager for the Collegian newspaper. She was co-president of Intramural Sports Board, worked with Life-sized Candyland, and was a Bronco Village Apartment assistant.


  Sarah Schumacher, daughter of James and Susan Schumacher, Delaware, Ohio, majored in biology. She served on executive council for Student Association, was president of Beta Beta Beta biological honor society, and was president of Public Relations Council. She was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, Alpha Chi academic honor society, and was New Student Days co-chair. Schumacher also worked with Life-sized Candyland.


  Nicole Thomas, daughter of Daniel and Diana Thomas, Waukee, Iowa, majored in media production and advertising. She was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, Alpha Chi academic honor society, and vice president of Society of Collegiate Journalists. Thomas was a Student Alumni Ambassador, Alpha Omega social sorority pledge trainer, and a communication arts and Altman Hall senator for Student Association. She was copy editor, entertainment editor, and business and circulation manager for the Collegian newspaper. Thomas worked with HCTV 6 as executive producer and director of live programs, and news and was promotions director and business manager for KFKX radio. She was on the Artist Lecture Series committee and won Golden Leaf Awards through the Nebraska Collegiate Association competition. Thomas presented at the ACP/CMA National College Media Convention and was published in the Hastings Tribune. She was a Creigh-Weyer Scholarship finalist and a

student media documentary coordinator for a Louisiana hurricane relief spring break trip.

Thomas also was a freelance producer of a radiation therapy teaching film. 


Vanessa Tiell, daughter of Scott and Lori Tiell, Bellevue, Neb., majored in biology. She was a member of Alpha Omega social sorority, was an executive council member of the Public Relations Council, was secretary of Beta Beta Beta biological honor society, and president of Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society. She was a member of Pre-Health Professions Club, Ignite, Campus Crusade, and was a residence hall assistant.  


  Richard “Seth” Torpin, son of Richard and Susan Torpin, Walton, Neb., majored in history and political science. He was a member of Public Relations Council, Hastings College Democrats, Phi Alpha Theta history honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, and was a humanities senator for Student Association. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Hastings College Band, Men’s Choir and Brass Choir. Torpin was a member of the Artist Lecture Series committee and was an opinion columnist and cartoonist for the Collegian newspaper. He was on the review board for Spectrum literary magazine and participated in the Messiah Chorus.
