April 23, 2007 - Hastings College to present Academic Showcase Day, panel discussion to be part of the event
Hastings College Alpha Chi academic honor society and the Artist Lecture Series are sponsoring the third annual Academic Showcase Day, Wednesday, May 2, from 8 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.
A highlight of the day’s activities will be a panel discussion in Perkins Auditorium, Fuhr Hall of Music, at 1 p.m. The panel will address: “Approaches to Hopper’s Room in New York.” Edward Hopper, (1882-1967), is recognized as the most important realist painter of 20th century American. Panel members include: Janice Driesbach, director of Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; and Mark Strand, professor of English and comparative literature, Columbia University, New York, N.Y. A Pulitzer Prize winner, Strand is a former U.S. poet laureate. Turner McGehee, professor of art and chair of the Hastings College Art Department, will moderate the panel.
The public is invited to the panel discussion and the presentations.
Student presentations will take place in Hazelrigg Student Union, Rooms A & B; Perkins Auditorium, Fuhr Hall of Music; and Wilson Center Auditorium.
Forty-five students will present a variety of academic topics and art work at this event.

Dr. Doug Kinnear, assistant professor of economics, is coordinating the event with the help of Academic Showcase committee members: Dr. Dan Wiley, assistant professor of English; Dr. Glen Avent, assistant professor of history; Dr. Stephanie Furrer, assistant professor of psychology; and Dr. Anne Fairbanks, associate vice president for academic affairs and professor of English.
