April 13, 2007 - Hastings College Recycling Club plans Earth Week activities

The Hastings College Recycling Club has several activities planned for Earth Week, Monday, April 16, through Sunday, April 22. Earth Week events promote awareness and possible solutions of environmental issues.

Throughout the week, members of Recycling Club will distribute more than 500, 16 oz., "earth-friendly" mugs to students, faculty, and staff, during lunchtime in Hazelrigg Student Union.  Students will be encouraged to reduce the number of plastic bottles they use, and reuse the mugs in classrooms, residence halls, and other establishments.

Also during lunchtime, the campus community will have the opportunity to sign commitments stating that for the remainder of the school year (one month) they will not drive their cars within campus limits, thus decreasing fuel emissions. Signed commitments will be posted on campus.

There will be a free showing of the Oscar winning film for best documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," Thursday, April 19, at 7 p.m., in French Memorial Chapel. The public is invited to attend. Following the movie, a panel discussion involving students, professors, and community members, will address environmental issues on a local and national level.

In honor of "National Prayer for Global Warming," Saturday, April 21, students will plant trees on campus and gather for a short prayer ceremony at noon on the north side of Perkins Library.
