March 26, 2007 - Hastings College to host jazz festival

Hastings College will host the annual high school jazz festival Monday and Tuesday, April 2 and 3. Fourteen jazz bands from 12 schools will work with clinicians and perform in concert, Monday, at 7:30 p.m., in French Memorial Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public.


 The concert will open with the Hastings College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Debra McKim. The group will play a variety of tunes for big bands and jazz combos.


 Special jazz music will be provided by The Headliners, a Midwest jazz quintet. Quintet members include: Roger Neumann, saxophone, Los Angeles, Calif.; Kirk Garrison, trumpet; Chicago, Ill.; Tony Gulizia, piano, Vail, Colo.; Andy Hall, bass, Omaha, Neb.; and Joey Gulizia, drums, Omaha, Neb.


 High school bands participating in the jazz festival include:  Overton, Lawrence/Nelson, Holdrege (high school and middle school), Nebraska City, Perkins County, Platteview, Grand Island (jazz/rock ensemble and stage band), Superior, Grand Island Northwest, Gretna, and Norris.


 The jazz festival and concert are supported by the Hastings College Artist Lecture Series.
