March 5, 2007 - Hastings College to host science fair

Hastings College will host the Nebraska Junior Academy of Science Regional Science Fair, Tuesday, March 6, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. In attendance will be 158 students from nine area high schools. Students will present 143 science projects.
 

Projects will be displayed in Hazelrigg Student Union. The public is invited to view them.


An awards ceremony will take place at 1:20 p.m. in French Memorial Chapel.


Schools participating in the science fair include: Central City, Eustis-Farnam, Franklin, Giltner, Newman Grove, Shelton, Silver Lake, Hastings St. Cecilia, and Wood River.

Dr. Neil Heckman, Hastings College assistant professor of chemistry, is coordinating the event.


There will be two presentations for students. Michele Bever, public health risk coordinator, South Heartland District Health Department, will discuss “Pandemic Flu – Could it Happen in Nebraska?” Rich Ewald, science and operations officer, and Scott Bryan, meteorologist intern, National Weather Service, Hastings, Neb., will address “Wild Weather in the Central Plains.” Presentations will take place simultaneously at 10:30 a.m. in French Memorial Chapel and Wilson Center Auditorium.
 

Hastings College faculty and students will present mini-lectures from 1 to 2 p.m. in Steinhart Hall of Science. Presenting will be: Dr. Amy Morris, associate professor of biology, “Adventures in Tanzania;” Dr. Dallas Wilhelm, professor of biology, “Interim Trip Compilation;” Dr. Bill Beachly, associate professor of biology, “Why We Are Water (Mostly);” Keian Kirkegaard and Brian Burks, seniors, “Senior Physics Projects;” Dr. John Bohmfalk, professor of biology and chemistry, “Simple Genetic Traits in Humans;” Dr. Jeri Thompson, assistant professor of psychology, “Speech Perception;” and Dr. Moses Dogbevia, assistant professor of chemistry, “Anomalous Expansion of Water.”
