Feb. 16, 2007 - Hastings College to hold ally training
The Hastings College Alliance group will conduct ally training Thursday, Feb. 22, at
6 p.m., in Hazelrigg Student Union, Room C. The public is welcome to participate.
Alliance promotes and educates about tolerance and acceptance of students of all sexual orientations, including gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans-gendered (GLBT) students.
The ally training session helps equip individuals with skills to support GLBT people. Alliance members Michael Mahanes, Maurianna Shelbourn, and Aaron Lauer will present.
There also will be a send-off for Lauer, who will be leaving for the 2007 Soulforce Equality Ride March 1. The Ride concludes April 30. Lauer will travel on the “west bus,” visiting schools in Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, North Dakota, and California.
Soulforce is an organization that seeks freedom for GLBT people from religious and political oppression. Lauer will travel across the country with 55 other GLBT activists to various colleges and universities that have policies discriminating against GLBT students. Those on the Ride will meet with administrators, faculty, students, and community members discussing how college policies harm GLBT students and non-GLBT students. Visit www.equalityride.com for more information.
A free will offering will be taken at the send-off.
