Feb. 14, 2007 - Hastings College to show Divided We Fall
Hastings College will show “Divided We Fall,” a full-length, independent documentary film about Americans living in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Part of the college’s Religion in Life activities, the film will be shown Monday, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m., in French Memorial Chapel. The presentation is free and open to the public.
Written and produced by Valerie Kaur, the documentary was directed, edited and produced by Sharat Raju. Both Kaur and Raju will be at the showing to answer questions.
When a turbaned Sikh man is brutally murdered in the aftermath of Sept. 11, Kaur, an American Sikh and student at Stanford University, journeys across American to discover who counts as “one of us.” Weaving expert analysis into a personal journey, “Divided We Fall” confronts the forces dividing a nation.
Produced by New Moon Productions, LLC, the film follows Kaur to Manhattan, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Arizona, and many other locations, as she interviews more than 70 people asking them, “who looks like an enemy,” “who looks like an American,” “who counts as ‘one of us’.” In 2005, Kaur revisited her original interviewees and spoke with them again.
“Divided We Fall” is the first feature documentary film that addresses hate crimes and hate violence in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001. The movie premiered in September 2006.
