November 30, 2006 - Hastings College junior Jillian Heiden named Creigh Weyer Scholar

Hastings College junior Jillian M. Heiden has been named the second Creigh Weyer Scholar by the Creigh Family Foundation. This highly-selective, post-graduate scholarship is offered to Hastings College juniors who have outstanding leadership potential.   Heiden, who is majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry and Spanish, plans to pursue a joint degree program in medicine and public health.  Following medical school, she plans to work in public health, focusing on underrepresented groups in the United States.  Heiden has been an active volunteer while maintaining a perfect 4.0 grade point average.  Among other activities, Heiden has volunteered for the American Red Cross and was a Hurricane Katrina relief volunteer. She will travel to Guatemala in January on a medical mission trip.  The Creigh Weyer Scholarship offers up to $40,000 in grants to support graduate study in any field in the United States or overseas, as well as active mentoring, guidance and support from senior leaders in business, government and academia.  Creigh Weyer Scholars are selected on the following criteria:·          Demonstrated leadership potential,·          High probability of becoming a leader who will have a substantial impact on his or her community,·          Highest ethical standards and integrity,·          Strong communication skills, and·          Strong academic record with likely acceptance by a first-rate graduate school. Other finalists for the Creigh Weyer Scholarship were:                ·          Wayne Beevers, an accounting major, plans to pursue a graduate business degree and a career in business. An active athlete, Beevers is interning with a leading power development company in California.·          Christine Bryant, a media production and advertising/public relations major, plans to pursue a career in public relations. She is editor-in-chief of the Bronco yearbook and is active in student government.

·          Kallan Picha, a German and international business major, plans to pursue graduate work in international relations.  Born in Germany, Picha plans to pursue a career in the non-governmental organization sector. She is involved in numerous musical activities and is an editor for the Collegian newspaper. ·          Kelly Robenhagen, an international studies and English major, plans to study international relations in preparation for a career in the foreign service.  Robenhagen plans to study in Northern Ireland this spring. ·          Aaron Rouse, a business administration and human services administration major, plans to pursue a career in non-profit management. Rouse is president of the Student Association and is active in numerous campus organizations.·          Melissa Theesen, a religion major and Spanish minor, plans to pursue a career in the non-profit sector.  An active volunteer, she has been involved in numerous activities to help underrepresented groups in the United States and Mexico.  Theesen will study in Guatemala this spring.  Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA).
