November 2, 2006 - Gold Orchestra of Manhattan, Kansas, to perform at Hastings College

Hastings College will host the Gold Orchestra of Manhattan, Kan., Friday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m., in French Memorial Chapel. The performance is free and open to the public.

The performance will include a medley from West Side Story; An Italian Elegy; Swing Low, Sweet Chariot; Over the Rainbow; and other selections.

An additional performance will take place Friday at 10 a.m., also in French Memorial Chapel, for Hastings Public Schools elementary string students.

Other scheduled performances include:  Kearney, Neb., Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Archway Monument Museum at 3 p.m., and the Merryman Performing Arts Center at 1:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 11, at 11:15 a.m., at Walnut Middle School, Grand Island, Neb. The orchestra will also perform in Beloit, Kan.

The select string orchestra is composed of 71 students in grades 5-11. They have performed in England; British Columbia; Seattle, Wash.; Dallas, Texas; and New York City, N.Y.

The orchestra was founded in 1989 by David Littrell, University Distinguished Professor of Music, Kansas State University. The initial Gold Orchestra had 10 students in grades 3-6, with 15 other students participating in a Silver Orchestra, a training group for learning orchestral routines and note-reading skills.
