October 6, 2006 - Charles Shields to speak at Hastings College

Author Charles Shields will speak at Hastings College, Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m., in Hazelrigg Student Union, Room C. Shields is author of Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee (2006).

The lecture is free and the public is invited.

Shields interviewed more than 600 people researching Lee’s struggle to complete her only novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The book became one of America’s most popular and bestselling novels of all time, but the author remained somewhat of a mystery. Shortly after the book received a Pulitzer Prize and was selected for a film adaptation, Lee stopped granting interviews.

Shields’ book is a vivid and lovingly told story regarding Lee, who still lives in her hometown of Monroeville, Ala. Shields also uncovered details of Lee’s friendship with Truman Capote, author of In Cold Blood, and how Lee spent time in Kansas investigating for his book.

A former teacher, Shields has been a reporter for public radio, a journalist, and the author of nonfiction books for young readers. He lives with his wife in Barboursville, Va.

Shields’ visit is sponsored by the Hastings College English Department, Hastings High School, Hastings Public Library and the YWCA.
