2006 - 2007 Releases

September 27, 2006 - Cal and Jane Johnson donate two sculptures to Hastings College

Hastings residents Cal and Jane Johnson donated two bronze sculptures to Hastings College. One piece, “Communion,” will be installed in front of French Memorial Chapel, and the second piece, “The Learning Curve,” will be placed over the sidewalk leading from the Daugherty Center to Hurley-McDonald Administration Building. Workers are preparing brick and flagstone bases and the sculptures should be in place within the next two weeks. “Communion” features two hands reaching toward each other. “The Learning Curve” features an arch of books. A young child, reading a book, sits atop the arch. Each sculpture will stand approximately 12 feet high. “The arch piece [The Learning Curve], tied into education so well,” said Cal Johnson. “While the little kid sitting on top the books doesn’t fit where the students are now, it’s where they were 10 years ago. We plan to dedicate this bronze to the many Hastings College alumni who teach across the nation.” The bronze statues were sculpted by Springville, Utah, artist Gary Lee Price. A sculptor for more than 25 years, Price’s work is found in public and private collections, galleries, museums, libraries and educational institutions throughout the world. “We’ve been looking for two or three years, since we started the endowment fund,” said Johnson. “We couldn’t find anything we liked, then this winter, we ran into Gary Price. “Communion” was the first sculpture we saw, and we liked how it tied into a religious theme.” The Johnsons established the Cal and Jane Johnson Fund for Campus Beautification, and through this fund, purchased the “Beauty of the Harvest” statue in 2000. That bronze, created by Martha Pettigrew, Kearney, Neb., stands in front of the Daugherty Center. “Jane and I feel this is one way we can enhance the beauty of Hastings College,” said Johnson. “The sculptures are something everyone who comes to campus can enjoy.” Future plans call for more sculptures to be placed on campus.
