Translations, by Brian Friel, is set in Ireland in 1833. The play tells the story of the British army’s campaign to replace the native Gaelic with English, an attempt to end centuries of fighting by setting up a political union based on a common language.

Against a beautiful backdrop, a British soldier Lieutenant Yolland falls in love with Marie, a peasant girl, and with Ireland. They are truly a pair of star-crossed lovers whose love is doomed.

Friel, one of Ireland’s most prominent playwrights, was awarded the Ewart-Biggs Peace Prize for Translations.

Translations is directed by George White, professor of theatre arts. Scenic designer is Jim Fritzler, associate professor of theatre arts, and costume designer is Ruth Nielsen, adjunct instructor of theatre arts. Assistant to the director is Zach Boyd, sophomore, son of Robert/Lisa Boyd, Hastings, Neb.; and stage manager is Sarah Vaughn, junior, daughter of Richard/Delores Vaughn, Omaha, Neb.
