August 23, 2006 - Ross Szabo to speak at Hastings College

The Hastings College peer education group SPAM (Students Promoting Active Mental Health) will host speaker Ross Szabo, Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m., in French Memorial Chapel. Szabo is director of youth outreach for the National Mental Health Awareness Campaign. The presentation is free, and the public is invited to attend. “Lots of kids feel empty or lonely or sad everyday, but don’t know why,” said Szabo. “I tell them that mental health problems can happen to anyone regardless of gender, intelligence or socioeconomic status.”

Szabo, who is bipolar, began experiencing manic highs and depressive lows at the age of 16. With the aid of therapy and medication, Szabo was able to graduate from American University, and now in the past five years, has spoken to more than 450,000 young people across the United States. He addresses depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, ADD, ADHD, schizophrenia and other mental conditions.
