June 2, 2008 - National survey shows Hastings College a leader in student satisfaction

Hastings College administrators released the results of the Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI), a national survey that measures student satisfaction across a broad spectrum of college life. Nearly 400 students from all four classes completed the SSI online in the spring. The survey is administered every two years.
“Hastings College’s top priority is serving students,” said Dr. Phillip Dudley, Jr., college president. The 2008 Student Satisfaction Inventory tells us Hastings College not only meets, but exceeds student expectations in nearly every area of college life. Nothing is more important to us.”
The SSI reflects the candid opinions of current students on topics critical to college choice and satisfaction such as academic advising, instructional effectiveness, campus safety and security, and student centeredness. The SSI indicates what is most important to Hastings College students, measures how well their expectations are met, and then compares their opinions with those of students attending other national and Midwestern private, four-year colleges and universities.
Hastings College’s results showed that students express greater satisfaction at the highest statistically significant level than do students from the national comparison group on 70 of the 73 items they were asked to rate.
Among the 70 items Hastings College students ranked with greater satisfaction were: The instruction in my major field is excellent, my academic advisor is knowledgeable about requirements in my major, the content of courses within my major is valuable, nearly all of the faculty are knowledgeable in their field, my academic advisor is approachable, the quality of instruction I receive in most of my classes is excellent, tuition paid is a worthwhile investment, it is an enjoyable experience to be a student on this campus, there is a commitment to academic excellence on this campus, I am able to register for classes I need with few conflicts, I am able to experience intellectual growth here, the campus is safe and secure for all students, my academic advisor is concerned about my success as an individual, major requirements are clear and reasonable, and there is a good variety of courses provided on this campus.
On the Midwestern comparison, Hastings College students expressed greater satisfaction at the highest, next highest, or third highest statistically significant level on 70 of the 73 items. The Midwest comparison group included private, four-year colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.
On the national comparison, Hastings College students also described campus staff as “caring and helpful” and expressed greater satisfaction at the highest statistically significant level. The national comparison includes 268,486 student responses from 391 institutions; the Midwestern comparison includes 99,041 student responses from 176 institutions.
Hastings College students also expressed greater satisfaction at the highest statistically significant level when compared with responses of students from other private, four-year colleges and universities on an institutional summary that compares Hastings College with national and Midwestern schools on the following key questions: “How has your college experience met your expectations?” “Rate your overall satisfaction with your experience here thus far,” and “If you had to do it over, would you enroll here again?”
