May 9, 2008 - Hastings College faculty honored at convocation

Several Hastings College faculty members were recognized Friday, May 11, at the annual Honors Convocation in French Memorial Chapel.

Faculty awards

Dr. Mark Hall, associate professor of mathematics and computer science, received the Faculty Achievement Award. All full-time faculty are eligible for this award, which includes a $2,500 cash award provided by Sodexo, the college’s food service. The recipient must have demonstrated significant and meritorious achievement in teaching. Students, faculty and staff make the nominations. 

A member of the faculty since 2001, Hall completed a bachelor of science degree at California Institute of Technology, and master’s and doctoral degrees at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Dr. John Kuehn, assistant professor of biology, received the Vondrak Outstanding Advisor Award. Full-time faculty and staff with academic advising duties are eligible for this honor, which includes a $1,000 cash award. The recipient must have demonstrated high standards in academic advising and outstanding service to the campus community.

Kuehn, a member of the faculty since 2004, completed a bachelor of arts degree at Hastings College and a doctor of veterinary medicine at Kansas State University, Manhattan. 

Dr. Robert Babcock, Dorothy Weyer Creigh Distinguished Professor of History and chair of the department, received the Distinguished Senior Faculty Award. Funded by Hal Dittmer ’62, Sacramento, Calif., and chair of the Hastings College Board of Trustees, the $5,000 award is presented to a faculty member who has dedicated at least 15 years of professional service to Hastings College. The winner also must demonstrate a sustained commitment to quality teaching and to campus and community service.

Babcock joined the faculty in 1992. He completed a bachelor of arts degree at Beloit College, a master of arts degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and a doctoral degree at the University of California-Santa Barbara. 

Chosen as the 2008-09 Artist Lecture Symposium (ALS) invited faculty lecturers were Dr. Stephanie Furrer and Dr. Glenn Avent. The lecturers are nominated by faculty members and selected by a vote of the student body. 

Furrer is assistant professor of psychology. A member of the faculty since 2005, she completed bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees at San Jose State University, and master of science and doctoral degrees at Purdue University. 

Avent, who joined the faculty in 2005, is an assistant professor of history. He completed bachelor and master’s degrees at the University of British Columbia, and a doctoral degree at the University of Arizona.
