April 30, 2008 - Students receive Hastings College Kessler Scholarships

Three high school seniors received prestigious Kessler Scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year at Hastings College. Recipients include: Rachel Lee, Golden, Colo; James Duin, Gretna, Neb.; and Jennifer Sharrick, Hastings, Neb.

Made possible by a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., the full-tuition scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding promise as Christian leaders and who plan to pursue a minor in Christian ministry.

The Kessler Scholarship, worth more than $80,000 over four years, is named for Rev. Dr. Silas Kessler, former member of the college’s board of trustees and former pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Hastings. This is the sixth year the scholarships have been awarded.

Recipients scored 26 or higher on the ACT and are in the top 20 percent of their high school class. Students were interviewed, wrote an essay, and provided letters of recommendation.

In addition to the scholarship, recipients assist with religious activities on campus, live in campus housing for four years, be active in a local congregation of their choosing, attend a summer workshop, and be instrumental in the college’s Vocation and Values Program.

Lee, a senior at Wheat Ridge High School, is a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish. She is the daughter of Kevin and Julie Lee.

Duin, a senior at Gretna High School, is a member of Mennonite Bretheren Church. He is the son of Paul and Vicki Duin.

Sharrick, a senior at Hastings Senior High School, is a member of First St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (ELCA). She is the daughter of Jim and Deb Sharrick.
