April 21, 2008 - Hastings College to present Academic Showcase Day, Dr. Mike Ibeji
Hastings College Alpha Chi academic honor society and the Artist Lecture Series are sponsoring the fourth annual Academic Show case, Wednesday, April 30, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. British film producer Dr. Mike Ibeji will kick off the event with a lecture, Tuesday, April 29, at 7 p.m., in French Memorial Chapel.
The public is invited to attend the evening lecture and the student presentations.
Ibeji will present “How Not to Make a TV Program in One Easy Lesson,” a humorous account of an unsuccessful experience he had as a producer, and how television really works. He will talk about why a film does not ever survive first contact with the elements and why the edit is the best of times and worst of times in film making.
Ibeji is series editor for the television show “Ancient Megastructures II.” He also has produced and directed a variety of other shows including: “Fearless Planet: Earth Story” (DISCOVERY Channel), Ancient Megastructures (National Geographic Channel), and Ultimate Rome Webgame (BBC).
Student presentations will take place in Hazelrigg Student Union, Rooms A and B; Hazelrigg Student Union, Room C; Wilson Center Auditorium; and in Perkins Auditorium, Fuhr Hall of Music.
Winner of the seventh annual sermon contest, sophomore Emily Spearman, Superior, Colo., will speak at a 9:30 a.m. service in French Memorial Chapel. She will address, “I’ve Received a Call..But I Don’t Have Good Reception.” Spearman is the daughter of Steven and Donna Spearman.
Dr. Stephanie Furrer, assistant professor of psychology, and Dr. Glenn Avent, assistant professor of history, are co-chairing the event. Other faculty members on the committee are: Dr. Anne Fairbanks, associate vice president for academic affairs and professor of English; Dr. Jeffery Hoffman, assistant professor of physical education and chair of the department; and Dr. John Kuehn, assistant professor of biology.
Student committee members are: Halah Bajaber, senior, daughter of Jeanie Bajaber and Akram Bajaber, Holdrege, Neb.; Eddie Krajicek, sophomore, son of Stephen and Diane Krajicek, Lincoln, Neb.; and Jeff Richards, senior, son of Rodger and Annetta Richards, Geneva, Neb.
In January, students submitted proposals, which included a short summary of their presentation. Each student was required to have a faculty sponsor who wrote a letter of support. Proposals were reviewed by the committee for final selection in March. Students will be allowed 20 minutes for each presentation, followed by a discussion and question and answer time. Faculty members will serve as moderators.
