2007 - 2008 Releases

April 16, 2008 - Hastings College to host model rocket launches

The Hastings College Teacher Education Department will host two model rocket launching demonstrations, Monday, April 21, at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., weather permitting, at the practice field located at University Street and Ash Avenue.
Major James Clegern, from the United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), Offutt Air Force Base, will do the demonstrations.
The public is welcome to view the launches.
At 9:30 a.m., Clegern will present “Space and Rocketry” to 100 fourth and sixth graders from Longfellow Elementary School. At 2 p.m., he will repeat the session to Hastings College education majors. Both presentations will be held in Wilson Center Auditorium.
Clegern’s presentations will explain how rockets work, how rockets are launched, how space is used, and what the future holds for space. The presentations will culminate with a hands-on model rocket launch at the practice field. Estes model rockets, with “A” class single stage solid engines and streamer recoveries, will be used for the demonstrations.
Clegern graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor of science degree in aerospace engineering. He completed a master of science degree, also in aerospace engineering, at the University of Tennessee. Since 1994, Clegern has served as division chief engineer in developing modeling and simulation at USSTRATCOM.
USSTRATCOM is a global integrator that oversees the missions of space operations, information operations, integrated missile defense, global command and control, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, global strike and strategic deterrence.
Barbara Sunderman, Hastings College assistant professor of teacher education, is coordinating the event.
