April 11, 2008 - Hastings College Alliance organization observing “Day of Silence”

The Hastings College Alliance organization is hosting “Day of Silence” activities, Wednesday, April 16. The public is invited to participate in the events.

Rev. Nancy Brink, pastor of North Side Christian Church, Omaha, Neb., will speak at a 10 a.m. service in French Memorial Chapel.

A faculty panel discussion regarding aspects of the family concerning homosexuality will take place at 12 p.m. in Hazelrigg Student Union, Room A. Members of the panel will include Brink, Dr. Robert Kettlitz, associate professor of sociology; and Dr. John Bohmfalk, professor of biology and chair of the chemistry department.

The annual “Breaking the Silence” vigil will take place at 7 p.m. in French Memorial Chapel. The vigil will include a reflection on the day’s experiences, and reading excerpts from poems, plays and other text that commemorate the silencing of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people and communities. The vigil will also feature music and a slide show.

The “Shower of Stoles” will be on display Monday through Friday, April 14-18, in French Memorial Chapel and Perkins Library. Each stole has a story regarding a clergy member who has come out, and then has been cast from the church.

Alliance promotes and educates about safety, dignity and respect for students of all sexual orientations, including gay, lesbian, straight, bisexual and/or transgendered people, and strives to create a supportive atmosphere for all.
