March 4, 2008 - Hastings College awarded James S. Kemper Foundation grant
Hastings College was awarded a one-year, $30,000 grant from the Chicago, Ill.-based James S. Kemper Foundation. The funds will be used to establish the Kemper Program in Social Entrepreneurship and enhance the college’s Center for Servant Leadership.
The Kemper Program in Social Entrepreneurship will include “Envision Grants” to enable faculty and students to plan and carry out new service learning projects and will provide funds for a leadership development training program.
In 1942, James Scott Kemper, founder of Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company and related Kemper insurance companies, established an independent, private foundation to help shape future leaders of American organizations. The Foundation, which has an endowment of $40 million, concentrates on funding projects related to higher education.
In 2004, the Foundation’s Board of Trustees determined that grants would be made to small, private undergraduate colleges, with a particular emphasis on liberal arts education and its relationship to administration, business, and leadership.
The Hastings College Center for Servant Leadership, established in 2007, is directed by Ron Chesbrough, vice president for student affairs; and Dr. Anne Fairbanks, associate vice president for academic affairs.
Objectives of the Center are to: challenge students to develop character as well as intellect and consider the needs of the world as they pursue their careers, facilitate communication among service and leadership groups to improve their effectiveness and efficiency, provide leadership training for students who demonstrate the desire and capacity to effect meaningful social change, and build students’ skills in teamwork, motivation, planning and communication.
