Feb. 25, 2008 - Hastings College part of Lilly grant project

Hastings College is one of 14 schools who will work with Saint John’s University, Collegeville, Minn., on a project funded by the Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment to identify ways to increase men’s involvement in volunteering, leadership training and vocational decision-making activities.

Saint John’s University, one of four remaining men’s colleges in the United States, was awarded a $599,900 grant to complete the project.

Representatives from 12 schools convened at Saint John’s University in February to do pilot projects. Dr. Daniel Deffenbaugh, associate professor of religion and philosophy, and junior Joel Niemann, Lincoln, Neb., represented Hastings College.

There is a growing concern that men who attend liberal arts colleges are less involved than women in internships, study abroad programs, volunteering and other experiential learning activities.

Saint John’s will pilot a project that includes a service and study trip to India, Nepal and Tibet, and host two national conferences to explore how to increase men’s volunteer involvement. Hastings College will implement a project on campus next year.

Other schools involved include: Davidson College, Morehouse College, Georgetown College, Wabash College, Hope College, Saint Norbert College, Luther College, Duke University, Wake Forest University, and Furman University. Two colleges have yet to be named.

Hastings College has benefited from Lilly Endowment Inc. in the past. In 2002, the Endowment awarded Hastings College $1.97 million to establish a program in the theological exploration of vocation. In 2006, the college received an additional $499.997 to help sustain the program.
