Feb. 14, 2008 - Emmanuel Jackson to speak at Hastings College chapel service

Liberian refugee Emmanuel Jackson will speak at the Hastings College chapel service, Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 10 a.m., in French Memorial Chapel. He will also be on campus Monday and Tuesday to meet with students.

The chapel service is open to the public.

Jackson is a student at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC). In February 2000, his family came to Hastings through the sponsorship of Catholic Social Services, and became involved with First St. Paul Lutheran Church. Through the church, Jackson learned of the Bridges Scholarship Program, a joint effort of LSTC and Carthage College to support and mentor students of color who plan to become ELCA pastors.

Jackson qualified for the program and enrolled.

Jackson fled from Liberia to refugee camps with his mother, brothers and sisters when he was 13 years old. His father, a minister, was killed in the civil war. While living in refugee camps in the Ivory Coast and Ghana, he and a friend started holding Bible study and fellowship. The group, which started out with five people, soon grew to 500.

Jackson’s brother, Reuben, is a senior at Hastings College. Reuben will be receiving his U.S. citizenship in Omaha, Thursday, Feb. 21.
