Jan. 7, 2008 - Hastings College to observe Martin Luther King, Jr., Day
Hastings College will observe Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, with a “Catch the Dream Celebration,” Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 14 and 15. The celebration will feature two guest speakers, as well as college students participating in community service projects.
Rev. Dr. Everett Reynolds will speak Monday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m., in French Memorial Chapel. Reynolds, a community activist and Omaha resident for more than 40 years, is past president of the Omaha chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and one of the founders of the Lead Safe Omaha Coalition. He has served many community organizations and causes, including the local Race Commission for Equality, advisor to the Mayor’s Commission, Voters Initiative, civil rights boycotts and demonstrations.
In 2002, Reynolds received the Omaha World-Herald Martin Luther King, Jr. “Living the Dream Award.”
Linda Crump, J.D., will speak Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 10:45 a.m., in French Memorial Chapel. She is assistant to the chancellor for equity, access and diversity programs at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In this role, Crump provides advice and support to the campus on issues of equal employment opportunity, affirmative action, accommodations for employees with disabilities and campus diversity programming.
Past president of the Nebraska Bar Association, and a 1990 graduate of the University of Nebraska, College of Law, Crump serves as co-chair of the Bar Association’s Minority and Justice Committee and is a member of the Judicial Resources Committee.
The public is invited to attend the free lectures.
Hastings College students will volunteer their time with several community service projects Tuesday afternoon during two, 90-minute sessions, at 1 and 3 p.m. Kim Graviette, director of career services, is coordinating the projects. Participants will donate their time at Crossroads Center, Adams County YWCA, Prairie Loft Education Center, and Longfellow Elementary. Another group will do volunteer work at Head Start, from 9 to 10:20 a.m. For more information about the service projects, contact Graviette at (402) 461-7387.
