Nov. 21, 2007 - Hastings College to show methamphetamine documentary

Hastings College will show “Rise Above Meth,” Thursday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m., in French Memorial Chapel. The documentary was filmed in Hastings and Adams County, and deals with the presence and effect of methamphetamine.

The event is free and the public is invited to attend.

A panel discussion will follow the film. Panel members include: Ron Chesbrough, Hastings College dean of student affairs; Dr. Dixie Heuton, clinical psychologist; Rev. Dr. David McCarthy, associate professor philosophy/religion and chaplain of Hastings College; and Larry Thoren, Hastings chief of police. John Ferrone, Ron Gardner Meth Coalition Project (RGMCP) coordinator, will facilitate the panel.

The Hastings Police Department will display samples of methamphetamine and related paraphernalia.  Copies of "Rise Above Meth" will also be available to those who would like to make a donation of at least $25 to RGMCP.

The Ron Gardner Meth Coalition Project is named in honor of 15-year Hastings police veteran Detective Ronald Gardner, who died in 2006 as a result of an apparent heart attack. He was the primary detective in charge of drug enforcement and numerous drug pushers went to jail or prison due to his efforts. The mission of the Coalition Project is to wipe out meth, and to address methamphetamine in the community from the perspectives of prevention, intervention, and treatment, by identifying, planning, and implementing community action items through the coordination of resources.

The event is sponsored by the Hastings College Office of Student Affairs. Contact Chesbrough at (402) 461-7394 for more information.
