Sept. 14, 2007 - Hastings College Homecoming/Family Weekend scheduled

Hastings College will celebrate Homecoming/Family Weekend, Wednesday-Sunday, Sept. 26-30, following the theme “Wild with Pride, 125,” in honor of the 125th anniversary of the college’s founding.  The weekend will feature athletic contests, a golf tournament, a lecture, a downtown parade, a reunion for science alumni, a tailgate barbecue, and reunions for the classes of 1967, 1977, 1982, 1987, and 1997. 


The 1977 men’s basketball team, the 1987 men’s golf team and Wayne Weber, coach and administrator at Hastings College from 1957-64, will also be honored.


Wednesday, Sept. 26
 An alumni chapel service will be held at 10 a.m. in French Memorial Chapel. Dr. Lee Wigert, Hastings College professor of sociology and a 1974 graduate of the college, will preach.


An alumni quartet will also perform. Quartet members, all employees of the college, include: Dr. Fritz Mountford ’75, professor of music; Dr. Robin Koozer ’76, professor of music; Sam Rennick ’76, vice president of enrollment and college relations; and Chris Schukei ’93, associate vice president for marketing and communications.


Thursday, Sept. 27
 A Hastings College Business After Hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Barrett Alumni Center. This event is held in conjunction with the Hastings Chamber of Commerce.


Friday, Sept. 28
Activities begin at 10 a.m., with an ALS Invited Faculty Lecture by John Kuehn, D.V.M., assistant professor of biology. He will address the topic “Lab Work and Cat Scans.” The lecture will take place in French Memorial Chapel.


 For the fifth year, legacy activities will be part of the festivities. A golf tournament will be held at Lochland Country Club. Registration begins at noon, with the tournament starting at 1 p.m. Money raised from the event will benefit the Tom McLaughlin Scholarship fund, a fund established in the memory of long-time Hastings College coach “Tiger” Tom McLaughlin.

The Hastings College and Doane College cross country teams will have a dual meet at

6 p.m. at Brickyard Park.


At 7 p.m., an open house will take place at Steinhart Hall of Science. Science alumni of Hastings College will be special guests, and current and former science faculty
members will give presentations.


The Bronco volleyball team will compete against Mount Marty College at
7:30 p.m. in Lynn Farrell Arena.


Saturday, Sept. 29
 Saturday events begin at 7:30 a.m. with a Bronco Gallop 5K Run/Walk.  The run/walk is in partnership with the Hastings Family YMCA. Participants may register in front of the Gray Center, 1100 N. Elm St., on the Hastings College campus. Cost for the run is $10, and includes a Hastings College 125th anniversary T-shirt.


 The 57th Melody Round-up Parade begins at 11 a.m. in downtown Hastings. Area high school bands will be competing for prizes, Hastings College Homecoming royalty will be presented, and college organizations will sponsor floats.


An all-campus tailgate barbecue will be held in the Gray Center parking lot from noon to 2 p.m. In honor of the college’s 125th birthday, hot dogs, chips and soda will be available for $1.25.


 The football team will face Northwestern College at 2 p.m. at the Osborne Family Sports Complex, and then at 6 p.m., the volleyball team will face Northwestern College in Lynn Farrell Arena.


An all-alumni reception will be held at the Barrett Alumni Center immediately following the football game.  At 8 p.m., alumni receptions will move to Murphy’s Wagon Wheel.


Sunday, Sept. 30
 First Presbyterian Church in Hastings will celebrate Hastings College Sunday at an

11 a.m. service. The Hastings College Choir and college personnel will be featured. The church is located at 621 N. Lincoln Ave.


The Bronco Bookstore will be open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday.
