"The education I received at Hastings College prepared me for my next step in life: graduate school. The economics program provided me with an excellent core education, which I built upon in graduate school. In addition, my advisor ensured that I took all of the prerequisite courses that graduate schools required. Outside of my economics classes at Hastings College, many of my other courses prepared me to be a skilled speaker and writer, which are necessities for teaching and research at the academic level. The best part about Hastings College is that the professors get to know students as individuals. This allows them to help students reach their full potential, which for me has been earning my Ph.D. in economics!"
Mission
The Economics Major prepares students to:
- succeed in careers in finance, banking, management, government service, international business, education, and other fields.
- successfully pursue graduate degrees in economics, business, finance, international studies, and law.
- meet the challenges of the complex, dynamic organizational environment.
- communicate effectively, think critically and creatively, solve problems, and work successfully in teams.
- develop global perspectives, gain sensitivity to critical current issues, and appreciate diversity.
Coursework
Students receive a thorough grounding in economic theory and practice, along with practical skills in critical analysis, communication and problem-solving. All Economics majors complete Senior Theses, which provide excellent training for the working world and the research skills needed for success in graduate school.
As part of their major coursework, all Economics students take courses in other subject areas in order to tailor their studies to their individual goals, whether they involve work in business, government, the non-profit sector, or pursuit of graduate degrees.
Omicron Delta Epsilon Economics Honorary
Qualified students may wish to join the Hastings College chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon, an international honor society in economics. To be eligible, a student must complete 12 hours of Economics coursework and earn a B average in those courses. Founded in 2003, ODE at Hastings College creates a forum in which students can learn more about the discipline of economics than is covered in the classroom. Student-faculty discussions, guest speakers, service projects and activities provide a fun atmosphere and another opportunity to get involved at Hastings College.
Opportunities
Hastings College students majoring in economics have been admitted to Ph.D. programs in economics, MBA programs, Masters of Public Policy programs and Law Schools. Graduates have been hired by Fortune 500 companies (domestically and internationally), banking and finance institutions and public policy think tanks. Some have gone on to serve organizations such as the Peace Corps.
