Gottsch Center for Leadership & Career Development

Your gift to the Gottsch Center for Leadership and Career Development will help students transition successfully from college to career and provide difference-making opportunities reflecting Bobby Gottsch’s innovative spirit, such as:

  • Work-study experiences that combine classroom learning with real-world endeavors
  • Professional internships in business, non-profits, and government agencies
  • Mentoring relationships and campus programs in partnership with alumni and business leaders
Hastings College will feature the Gottsch Center for Leadership and Career Development in a renovated student union. An expanded Career Services staff will guide students through a comprehensive, four-year career development program. Beginning with their first year, students will participate in experiences designed to help them discern their vocation, connect with employers, and serve their communities. Opportunities will include exploratory internships, service-learning at nonprofits, mentoring by well-placed alumni, and study abroad. These will lead, by students’ junior or senior years, to a formalized internship in their chosen occupational area and a career portfolio with academic transcripts, references from mentors, and evidence of career-related experiences.

Employers and recent graduates agree that the kinds of experiences to be offered by the Gottsch Center are critical for career preparation. In a 2012 National Association of Colleges and Employers survey, graduates who took part in paid internships reported better success at getting job offers. A 2010 Association of American Colleges and Universities survey showed that employers are looking for students who communicate well, think critically, and solve problems–the kinds of skills acquired through a liberal arts education.

The Gottsch Center will build on Hastings College’s broad-based curriculum while immersing students in real-world experiences, strengthening their prospects in the job market and making them more competitive, versatile, employable and, ultimately, promotable.
