Residency Philosophy and Requirement

Hastings College believes traditionally-aged, college first-year students, sophomores and juniors benefit greatly from living in an on-campus, residential environment.  The college believes that nearly as much growth and development takes place through a campus residential community experience as in the classroom.  Opportunities exist for leadership, involvement, and community life in an on-campus environment that are not available in off-campus housing.  Upper-class students become role models for younger students and relationships evolve into deep and long-lasting friendships.

The three-year residency requirement reflects the college’s overall commit­ment to personal growth through on-campus residency and serves to uphold the overall mission of the college. All first-year, sophomore and junior students, including Hast­ings area students, are required to live on campus unless they meet the following criteria for exemption from on-campus housing:

1. Reside with their parent or legal guardian in their primary residence within Adams County, Nebraska (the county encompassing the college);

2. Have senior class standing (87 hours of credit or more by the first day of classes) and have lived on campus six semesters;

3. Will be a part-time student;

4. Are married or a single, custodial parent;

5. Are 23 years of age or older by the first day of classes in the school year under consideration, or are enrolled in the 22 Plus Program;

6. Have their Associate’s degree.

Spring 2013 End-of-Year Campus Housing Closing Information

Final May Closing for the Residence Halls.  Students living in the residence halls must check-out of their room 24 hours after their last final.   The residence halls officially close, Friday, May 17, 2013, at 12 noon. 

Final May Closing for the Apartments.   Students must check out of their apartments 24 hours after their last final.   Students who are involved in commencement must check out at the latest by Sunday, May 19, 2013, at 5:00 p.m.  

Final May Closing for the Honors Houses.   Students must check out of their honors houses 24 hours after their last final.  Students who are involved in commencement must check out at the latest by Sunday, May 19, 2013, at 5:00 p.m.  

Moving Back to Campus for Fall 2013 — New Students and Transfer Students

New Students and New Transfer Students Living in the Residence Halls

New students and new transfer students may move into their residence halls, between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday, August 23. You should plan to go first to the Farrell Arena lobby pick up your New Student Days packet, nametag and class schedule before checking-in at your residence hall. Further details for New Student Days will be sent to all new students and updated online. Our big Welcoming Convocation for new students and their families begins at 3:00pm in the arena, so you will want to be mostly moved in before that starts. If you have any questions or special concerns about moving in, you may contact the following staff:

Early Arrivals to Campus Must Have Prior Approval

Only those new students and new transfer students who are participating in official college activities may check-in to campus housing at dates earlier than those given above. Such activities may include pre-season athletics, band camp, cheerleading, and forensics. The coach or advisor for the activity will make arrangements for you and let you know the dates and times for your early check-in.
