Hastings College is the top liberal arts college in Nebraska, according to The Washington Monthlys Annual College Guide. Hastings was the highest rated Nebraska liberal arts school in both the 2005 and 2006 guides.
The Washington Monthly, a magazine of U.S. politics and government based in Washington, D.C., bases its rankings on three main criteria:
1. how well the college or university promotes an ethic of service to country
2. how well it fosters scientific and humanistic research
3. how well it performs as an engine of social mobility
The editors of the San Francisco Chronicle praised The Washington Monthlys Annual College Guide in an August 2006 editorial: If we ran the world, the college rankings that would matter most would be the annual ones from The Washington Monthly, the Chronicle editors wrote. The monthly chooses its top schools based on what they're doing for America, not on how much their alumni choose to give.
