HASTINGS COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD COMPETES AT MIDLAND LUTHERAN COLLEGE HALF-MARATHON
Dec. 8---
Bryan Eicher became the first male distance runner to break a school record in Track and Field in a distance event since the turn of the century by breaking Jed Cornforth’s 1999 school record in the ½ marathon.  Bryan ran 1:11:19 (5th place) which was over 81 seconds faster than the previous mark set in 1999.  Five other Hastings College distance runner’s competed this past Saturday in Fremont, Neb.  David Dierking placed 15th (1:14:07), Kyle Smith 18th (1:14:55), Rudy Mignon 22nd (1:17:33), James Hanseling 24th (1:18:39), Nick Crowl 33rd (1:25:57). The first 3 Bronco finishers hit last years NAIA Automatic Qualifying Mark (this years has yet to be established) and 1 additional runner hit the B standard.

Scottie Shaw ran the 2nd fastest 1/2 marathon in school history placing 2nd in Fremont, Neb. just behind an athlete from Black Hills State.  Scottie’s time of 1:26:02 is 18 seconds faster than Hastings College alumni Nicole Deroin (2002 NAIA National Champion in women’s 10000m run).  Scottie’s time was still 3 minutes behind Hastings College alumni Kris Winbinger (Rivera) ’96 and should meet the NAIA automatic standard for the marathon.  Additional Broncos that competed on Saturday were Brittany Mosel 1:32:44 (15th), Casey Conner 1:34:14 (17th) and Jordan Broberg 1:42:35 (25th).  Brittany’s time would meet last year’s automatic qualifying standard for the marathon (this years is yet to be established) and Casey’s would meet the provisional (B) standard.

Coach Clay’s comments “With five athletes hitting the 2008 automatic standard this may be the best collective performance for the endurance group in nearly six years.  The athletes handled the cold temperatures (low 30’s with wind chill under 20 degrees) and distance (13.1 miles) like seasoned marathoners."
