Broncos Fall in GPAC Semi to Dordt College
Nov. 7 --
The Hastings College volleyball team was defeated in the semi-finals of the GPAC tournament to Dordt College 24-26, 26-28, 25-18, 14-25. Dordt will advance to play #1 seed Northwestern College while Hastings will wait to hear the announcement of teams picked for the NAIA National Tournament. 

For the Broncos, Leah Dostal had 12 kills and Kendra Schwein added 11. Haley Beardsley set 42 assists running the offense. Melynne Kessler had 2 ace serves and 35 digs. Beardsley added 12 digs for a double-double. Kelsey Wells had a part in 8 of the team's 11.5 blocks.

Senior Melynne Kessler Named GPAC Libero-of-the-Week
Nov. 3 --
Hastings libero Melynne Kessler is the GPAC/Haff Mid-America Sports Volleyball Libero-of-the-Week. Kessler, a senior from Bellevue, Nebraska, averaged 6.0 digs per game as the Broncos went 2-0 on the week with wins over Dana and Midland Lutheran. For the week, she was 17-19 on serve receive and completed 33-34 service attempts with four ace serves. Hastings is now 27-8 and went 11-5 in teh GPAC. The Broncos will be the fourth seed in the conference tournament and host the winner of Dordt/Mount Marty on Saturday in a quarterfinal in Hastings, Nebraska.

Broncos #4 Seed in GPAC Tournament
Nov. 2 --
Northwestern College will be the number one seed when the 2009 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Postseason Volleyball Tournament opens on Wednesday, November 4.  The Red Raiders are the number one seed and regular season champions after going 16-0 in conference play and 30-2 overall.  Northwestern has secured the league’s first automatic bid to the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament.


The 2009 GPAC Volleyball Tournament will feature 12 teams.  The winner of the tournament receives the second automatic berth to the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament.  The GPAC receives two berths because the conference has 12 NAIA volleyball teams.  The top four seeds will receive first round byes and not play on Wednesday, November 4.  Seeds 5-12 will play in first round matches with the winners advancing to play the top four seeds on Saturday, November 7.  The semifinals will be played on Wednesday, November 11 and the GPAC Postseason Championship will be played on Saturday, November 14.


The NAIA National Volleyball Tournament will begin on Saturday, November 21, with opening round matches at 12 campus sites across the country.  The top 11 teams in the country and Morningside College (as local host) will automatically advance to the final field of 24 in Sioux City, Iowa, at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena December 1-5, 2009.  The final 12 spots will be filled by the winners of the opening round matches.

Broncos Sweep Warriors
Oct. 31 --
The Hastings College volleyball team defeated Midland Lutheran College 25-22, 25-16, 25-19. The junior varsity team won a thrilling match 25-5, 29-31, 15-10.

The offense was led by Kendra Schwein and Tracia Norblade with 11 and 10 kills apiece. Leah Dostal added 9 kills. Haley Beardsley set 35 assists. Melynne Kessler served 2 aces and dug 20 attacks. Kelsey Wells led the defense at the net with a touch in 4 of the team's 11 blocks.

In the junior varsity match, Amanda Francescato, Gillian Hogeland, and Heidi Daubendiek led the team with 9 kills apiece. Kirsten Pawloski and Danielle Miller had 15 and 14 assists respectively. Miller and Daubendiek each had 2 service aces. Amber Himmelberg had 22 digs as the libero. The team was credited with 5 blocks.

This was the final regular season match for the Broncos. The varsity will take a record of 27-8, 11-5 in conference into the play-off starting next week. The brackets will be released at a later time. The win over Midland was the final match for the junior varsity squad. They finish the year 11-7 in regluar matches, 11-5 in conference matches, and 34-18 for their entire season, including all tournament matches.

Broncos 26-8 With Win Over Dana College
Oct. 30 --
The Hastings College volleyball team defeated Dana College 25-10, 25-17, 20-25, 25-17 Friday night to win their 28th match of the season and move to 10-5 in GPAC conference action. The junior varsity sqad also beat the Vikings 25-20, 22-25, 16-14.

Offensively, 3 Broncos had double-digit kills with Kendra Schwein with 14, Tracia Norblade with 12, and Leah Dostal with 11. Haley Bearsley had a double-double on the night with 39 assists and 13 digs. Liz Van Kirk was a weapon at the serving line with 4 aces and Melynne Kessler added 2 of her own aces in addition to 22 digs. As a team, the Broncos had 10 blocks and hit .236.

For the junior varsity victory, Amanda Francescato had 9 kills, followed by Jessie Sorensen and Heidi Daubendiek with 5 kills apiece. Kirsten Pawloski and Danielle Miller shared the setting duties with 12 and 9 assists respectively. Amber Himmelberg had 18 digs in the match.

The Broncos will wrap up the regular season with a home match against Midland Lutheran College on Saturday at 1:30pm and 3pm. Parents of the players and seniors will be honored between matches.

Broncos Sweep Weekend Competition
Oct. 26 --
The Hastings College volleyball team beat GPAC opponents Mount Marty College and Concordia University this past weekend in a combined 6 set sweep. Against MMC, Hastings College won 25-13, 25-14, 25-12. In Saturday's match, HC defeated Concordia University 25-20, 29-27, 25-16. The junior varsity also defeated their opponents 25-15, 25-14 over Mount Marty College and 20-25, 25-10, 15-11.

Kendra Schwein was the offensive leader with 11 kills against Mount Marty. Allie Mohrman and Tracia Norblade contributed 9 kills apiece. Haley Beardsley set 33 assists. Lindsey Sitorius served 2 of the team's 3 aces. Melynne Kessler had 14 digs and Norblade had 10.

In the JV win, Amanda Francescato and Drew Sothers were the kill leaders with 5 and 4 kills. Dani Miller set 14 assists, while Kirsten Pawloski had 6 assists and 2 aces. Amber Himmelberg had 15 digs in the match.

Against the Bulldogs of Concordia, Leah Dostal led the team with 8 kills on 15 swings. Kendra Schwein and Tracia Norblade chipped in 7 and 6 kills each. Haley Beardsley had 31 assists in the win. Schwein had 2 of the 6 aces in the match. Defensively, Melynne Kessler had 14 digs and the team had 7 blocks.

The JV won in a 3 set match with Kristen Rubenthaler and Amanda Francescato each getting 6 kills. Dani Miller and Kirsten Pawloski teamed up for 19 assists. Amanda Wilkening and Heidi Daubendiek each had 2 ace serves. Amber Himmelberg and Francescato had double-digit digs with 17 and 12.

The Broncos return home for the final GPAC matches of the season Friday and Saturday against Dana College and Midland Lutheran College. Friday's games against the Vikings are at 6pm and 7:30pm. The games against MLC will be at 1:30pm and 3pm. Saturday's games will be in honor of the seniors and parents of all HC volleyball athletes.

Broncos Fall in 5 to Doane College
Oct. 21 --
The Hastings College volleyball lost to Doane College in 5 sets Tuesday night 26-24, 20-25, 25-21, 22-25, 19-21. The junior varsity also lost to the Tigers 22-25, 21-25.

Kendra Schwein led the offense with 24 kills, while Tracia Norblade and Allie Mohrmand added double-digit kills with 15 and 10 kils respectively. Haley Beardsley had 63 assists and 12 digs for a double-double. Melynne Kessler had 36 digs from her libero position and Norblade supported her effort with 27 digs. As a team, the Broncos had 10 blocks with Katie Moller getting her hands on 7 of them.

In the junior varsity match, Amanda Francescato had 7 kills and Danielle Lebsock had 4. Dani Miller and Kirsten Pawloski shared the setting duties with 9 and 6 assists apiece. Amber Himmelberg dug 13 attacks for the team high.

The Broncos will take the court again Friday and Saturday for more GPAC action. Friday, game time is at 6pm and 7:30 at Hastings College against the Lancers of Mount Marty College. The team is on the road Saturday at Concordia University, playing at 6pm and 7:30pm.

Broncos Go 1-1 in South Dakota
Oct. 18 --
The Hastings College volleyball team defeated Dakota Wesleyan University 25-13, 23-25, 25-14, 25-10 Friday night before losing to University of Sioux Falls in 5 sets on Saturday night 19-25, 25-10, 25-15, 21-25, 16-18. The junior varsity team defeated DWU 25-19, 25-17, then lost to USF 11-25, 22-25.

Against Dakota Wesleyan, Kendra Schwein, Kelsey Wells, and Kirsten Nickel each had 10 kills to lead the balanced attack. Haley Beardsley had 45 assists and 3 service aces. Melynne Kessler led the defense with 23 digs and the team had 7 blocks.

Against the Cougars from USF, freshman outsides Kendra Schwein and Kirsten Nickel led the offense with 18 and 13 kills respectively. Haley Beardsley had 55 assists. Contributing 32 digs was Melynne Kessler and Kelsey Wells had a part in 7 of the team's 10 blocks.

For the junior varsity, Amanda Francescato had 7 kills against the Tigers of DWU. Kirsten Pawloski and Dani Miller split the setting duties with 8 and 4 assists apiece, as well as serving 5 aces between them. Amber Himmelberg had 10 digs and Francescato added 8.

Against the Cougars, the junior varsity was led again by Amanda Francescato with 5 kills, followed by Aimee Thomas and Gillian Hogeland with 4 each. Dani Miller had 8 assists and Kirsten Pawloski had 7. Amber Himmelberg bettered her dig total with 12.

The Bronco teams will be back in action Tuesday night in Crete for a GPAC match up with the Tigers of Doane College. Game time is 6pm and 7:30pm.

Broncos Take #5 Lopers to 4
Oct. 14 --
The Hastings College volleyball team traveled to University of Nebraska Kearney Wednesday night to take on the #5 ranked team in NCAA Division II. The Broncos were defeated by the Lopers in 4 sets 27-25, 11-25, 17-25, 13-25.

For the Broncos, Kelsey Wells and Kendra Schwein hit double-digit kills with 11 and 10 respectively. Schwein also served 2 aces. Haley Beardsley set 39 assists. Four athletes had double-digit kills: Melynne Kessler with 15, Haley Beardsley with 14, Lindsey Sitorius with 13, and Kirsten Nickel with 10. The defense also added 7 team blocks.

The Broncos will be back in action this weekend with a trip to Mitchell, South Dakota and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Game time is 6pm and 7:30pn on Friday against Dakota Wesleyan University. They travel to University of Sioux Falls on Saturday to play at 1:30pm and 3pm.

Broncos Swept by #5 Northwestern College
Oct. 10 --
The Hastings College volleyball team suffered their 5th loss of the season to #5 ranked Northwestern College from Orange City, Iowa. Set scores were 17-25, 20-25, 19-25 in favor of the Red Raiders. The junior varsity was also defeated 23-25, 18-25.

For the Broncos, Kelsey Wells had 8 kills, while Tracia Norblade and Kendra Schwein hit 7 and 6 kills respectively. Haley Beardsley set 23 assists. Melynne Kessler had 13 digs for the defense.

For the junior varsity, three athletes had 5 kills - Amanda Francescato, Aimee Thomas, and Danielle Lebsock. Dani Miller had 11 assists and served 2 ace serves. Amber Himmelberg and Francescato had 8 digs apiece.

The Broncos will be on the road this week with a varsity match at University of Nebraska Kearney on Wednesday at 7pm. GPAC action will continue for both teams on Friday and Saturday (16th-17th) with a trip to Dakota Wesleyan on Friday night and at University of Sioux Falls on Saturday. Game time is 6pm and 7:30pm on Friday, then 1:30pm and 3pm on Saturday.

Broncos Defeat #24 Dordt in 4
Oct. 9 --
The Hastings College volleyball team defeated #24 ranked Dordt College 3-1 Friday night. The Broncos won 25-22, 26-24, 27-29, 25-16. The junior varsity also beat Dordt 25-18, 22-25, 17-15. The victory moves the Broncos to 22-4 on the season and 6-2 in GPAC play.

For the Broncos, kill leaders were Kelsey Wells (13), Kendra Schwein (12), and Tracia Norblade (11). Norblade had her first double-double for the season as she also had 21 digs. As a team, HC out hit DC .204 to .163. Haley Beardsley set up 52 asists and served 2 aces, as did Lindsey Sitorius and Melynne Kessler. Kessler added 32 digs to her performance. The Broncos had 6 team blocks in the match.

In the win for the JV, Danielle Lebsock had 11 kills, while Amanda Francescato and Jessie Sorensen added 7 and 6 kills respectively. Kirsten Pawloski and Dani Miller shared the setting duties with 14 and 11 assists apiece. Amber Himmelberg add 22 digs to the win. As a team, the Broncos had 10 blocks and 3 ace serves.

The Broncos will be back in action Saturday, October 10 at 1:30pm and 3pm against #5 Northwestern College.

Broncos Take 4 to Defeat Prairie Wolves on "Play Tough; Play Pink" Night
Oct. 6 --
The Hastings College volleyball team defeated Nebraska Wesleyan University 25-17,25-20, 17-25, 25-19 Tuesday night for "Play Tough, Play Pink" night at Hastings College. The junior varsity team also won 25-20, 25-21.

The offense was led by Kelsey Wells and Kendra Schwein with 15 and 12 kills apiece, with Wells hitting .520 for the match. Three other Broncos were just below double-digit kills with 9 - Allie Mohrman, Tracia Norblade, and Leah Dostal. Haley Beardsley dished out 47 assists. Melynne Kessler led the defense with 27 digs, while Norblade and Van Kirk contributed 14 and 10 kills respectively.

For the junior varsity, Amanda Francescato hit .318 with 10 kills and getting her the ball was Dani Miller and Kirsten Pawloski with 9 and 10 assists apiece. Jessie Sorensen served 2 aces and blocked 2 attacks. Amber Himmelberg led the defense with 12 digs.

The Broncos take the home floor Friday and Saturday with matches at 6pm and 7:30pm on Friday against Dordt College, then at 1:30pm and 3pm against Northwestern College on Saturday.

Broncos Defeat Concordia 3-0
Oct. 3 --
The Hastings College volleyball team won their 20th game of the season with a victory over Concordia University Saturday afternoon 25-12, 25-16, 25-15. The Broncos are now 20-4 on the season and 4-2 in the GPAC.

Offensively, Kelsey Wells had a big game with 15 kills on 22 swings to hit .545. Kendra Schwein also had double-digit kills with 12. Haley Beardsley lofted up 34 assists. Melynne Kessler had 3 of the team's 7 service aces to go with 10 her digs. Tracia Norblade led the defense with 14 digs, while Wells had a part in 5 of the 8 team blocks.

The junior varsity team also swept the Bulldogs 25-17, 25-22. Amanda Francescato was the kill leader with 4, while Gillian Hogeland and Hannah Rundle contributed 3 apiece. Danielle Miller and Kirsten Pawloski shared the setting duties with 8 and 5 assists respectively. Kristen Rubenthaler and Jessie Sorensen each served 2 aces. Libero Amber Himmelberg had 9 digs and Danielle Lebsock had 6 digs.

The Broncos will be back in action Tuesday, October 6th at 6 and 7:30 against Nebraska Wesleyan University in GPAC action for "Play Tough, Play Pink" night at Lynn Farrell Arena. Admission is free and pink t-shirts will be given out to the first 1,000 people (starting at 7pm). Donations will benefit breast cancer research.

Broncos Rally From 0-2 Over Briar Cliff Unviersity
Sept. 26 --
The Hastings College volleyball team lost the first two sets to Briar Cliff University on Saturday in Sioux City before coming back to win the next three sets and the match 22-25, 23-25, 25-26, 25-15, 19-17. The win moves the team to 19-4 on the season and 3-2 in GPAC play. The JV also beat the Chargers 25-18, 25-17.

Coming up big in the match was junior right side hitter, Leah Dostal and freshman outside hitter, Kendra Schwein. They had 21 kills apiece, with Dostal hitting .375 and Schwein hitting .348. They combined for 42 of the team's 82 kills. Running the offense was Haley Beardsley with 68 assists. Melynne Kessler led the defense with 28 digs, while Heidi Daubendiek led the blockers with 3.

For the junior varsity, their two set sweep of the Chargers was led by Amanda Francescato with 8 kills, while Dani Miller and Kirsten Pawloski combined for 16 assists. Amber Himmelberg dug up 7 attacks in her libero position, while Miller and Pawloski contributed 6 digs apiece. Aimee Thomas got her hands on 4 of the team 7 blocks.

The JV team will be in action on Tuesday, September 29 in North Platte against North Platte Community College at 7pm. They will play again on Saturday, October 3 while hosting Concordia University in a JV-Varsity double header. Game time is 6pm and 7:30pm against the Bulldogs.

Hastings Defeated by Morningside
Sept. 25 --
The Hastings College volleyball team suffered a second GPAC conference loss to the Mustangs of Morningside College 22-25, 17-25, 19-25. The JV was also defeated in 3 sets 25-23, 21-25, 10-15.

Kendra Schwein had a match-high 10 kills, while Leah Dostal chipped in 8 kills. Haley Beardsley set 32 assists and served 2 aces. Melynne Kessler had 19 digs from the back row, while Kelsey Wells helped out in 4 blocks team blocks.

For the JV, Amanda Francescato had 6 kills, while Hannah Rundle and Danielle Lebsock each contributed 4 kills. Danielle Miller set 19 assists. Amber Himmelberg led the defense with 14 digs. Jessie Sorensen led the front row defense with 4 blocks.

The Broncos will remain in Sioux City another day to face Briar Cliff University in a GPAC match up. Game time is 6pm and 7:30pm.

Tigers Take Down Broncos
Sept. 22 --
The Hastings College volleyball team was defeated by Doane College 20-25, 23-25, 22-25 Tuesday night.

Double-digit kill leaders were Kendra Schwein and Leah Dostal with 11 kills apiece, followed by Kelsey Wells with 10. Haley Beardsley set 43 assists. Melynne Kessler dug up 16 attacks in the back row and Wells had 3 blocks at the net.

In the JV match, the Tigers won in 2 games. For HC, Danielle Lebsock had 7 kills while Jessie Sorensen served 2 aces. Amber Himmelberg and Amanda Francescato had 16 and 15 digs respectively. Sorensen blocked 5 attacks.

Both teams will be back on the road this weekend, September 25-26, at Morningside College and Briar Cliff University. The Broncos take on Morningside on Friday at 6pm and 7:30pm. They move across town to take on Briar Cliff University on Saturday at 6pm and 7:30pm.

Broncos Take 3rd; Go 1-1 on Day 2
Sept. 19 --
The Hastings College volleyball team was defeated in four sets by Wayland Baptist University 25-23, 21-25, 23-25, 16-25 on day two of the Mustang Classic, hosted by Morningside College. They bounced back to take 3rd with a win over Dakota Wesleyan University 25-21, 25-16, 25-19.

For the Broncos, Kendra Schwein and Leah Dostal led the offense with 16 and 14 kills respectively. Haley Beardsley had 46 assists while Liz Van Kirk served 2 aces. She also contributed 12 digs to compliment Melynne Kessler's 17 digs. Kelsey Wells led the blockes with 3.

Against DWU, Kendra Schwein and Kelsey Wells hit double-digit kills with 11 and 10 kills apiece. Haley Beardsley set 30 assists with 2 ace serves. Melynne Kessler and Liz Van Kirk led the defense with 16 and 12 kills respectively. Wells took part in 10 of the team's 16 blocks.

Allie Mohrman was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Broncos will take on Doane College in a conference match up on Tuesday, September 22, in Hastings. JV takes the court at 6, followed by the varsity at 7:30.

HC Starts 2-0 at Mustang Classic
Sept. 18 --
The Hastings College volleyball team defeated University of Sioux Falls 25-16, 25-14, 25-17, then took four games to get by Ashford University 20-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-20 in the Friday games at the Mustang Classic, hosted by Morningside College.

Against the Cougars, Kelsey Wells hit .524 with 12 kills to lead the Broncos. Kendra Schwein chipped in 9 of her own. Haley Beardsley and Lindsey Sitorius shared the setting responsibilities with 11 and 23 assists. Liz Van Kirk served 2 aces and Melynne Kesser dug 21 attacks. Wells also contributed defensively with a hand in 6 of the team's 8 blocks.

In the second match, Allie Mohrman was in double-digit kills with 12, followed by Kendra Schwein with 9, and Leah Dostal, Kelsey Wells, and Kirsten Nickel each with 8 kills. Haley Beardsley dished out 38 assists. Liz Van Kirk and Melynne Kessler each served 2 aces, while Kessler had 15 digs to lead the defense. Wells and Mohrman combined for 6 of the team's 11 blocks.

The Broncos take on Wayland Baptist Saturday at 12pm. Following the completion of pool play, championship games will be assigned for 2pm or 4pm.

Broncos Beat Prairie Wolves in 4
Sept. 16 --
The Hastings College volleyball team moved to 2-0 in the GPAC conference, with a  15-1 overall record after defeating Nebraska Wesleyan University 25-19, 21-25, 25-22, 25-22 Tuesday night.

Offensively, the Broncos were led by Kelsey Wells and Kendra Schwein with 15 and 13 kills respectively. Allie Mohrman and Leah Dostal chipped in 11 and 10 kills. Haley Beardsley recorded 53 assists for the match and 2 ace serves. Tracia Norblade led the defense with 23 digs, while Melynne Kessler and Liz Van Kirk added 19 and 14 digs apiece. Wells stopped the Prairie Wolves 6 times with her block.

The Junior Varsity swept NWU, winning 25-20, 25-20. Outside hitters Danielle Lebsock and Amanda Francescato killed the ball 11 and 6 times apiece. Danielle Miller and Kirsten Pawloski shared the setting duties and recorded 22 assists between them. Amber Himmelberg and Kristen Rubenthaler each served 2 aces. Francescato added 10 digs, while Rubenthaler blocked 3 attacks.

The Broncos take to the road for the weekend with the varsity traveling to Sioux City to take part in the Morningside Mustang Classic. Game time is 3pm against University of Sioux Falls and 7pm against Ashford University on Friday. Saturday, a 12pm game against Wayland Baptist University starts off the day, followed by championship play in the afternoon. The JV travels two teams to the Northeastern Junior College Tournament in Sterling, CO, for games on Friday and Saturday. Conference action for both teams resumes on Tuesday, September 22nd at home against Doane College.

Broncos Split Matches on Day 2; Move to 14-1 on the Season
Sept. 12 --
The Hastings College volleyball team suffered their first loss of the season in a 5 game set against College of the Ozarks 21-25, 25-18, 25-20, 10-25, 11-15. In the nightcap, the Broncos swept Bethany College 25-6, 25-17, 25-15.

Against College of the Ozarks, Kendra Schwein and Kelsey Wells led the offense with 16 and 10 kills respectively. Haley Beardsley got them the ball with 39 assists. She also contributed 2 ace serves, as did Christina Headrick. Melynne Kessler dug up 27 attacks, while Liz Van Kirk chipped in 10. Wells was also a force defensively at the net with 8 blocks.

Against Bethany College, a balanced attack brought the Broncos victory as Katie Moeller and Allie Mohrman led with 6 kills apiece, Tracia Norblade, Kendra Schwein, and Leah Dostal each had 5. Running the show was Haley Beardsley and Lindsey Sitorius with 19 and 13 assists. Carissa Kinne was effective at the service line with 3 aces. Melynne Kessler once again was over 20 digs with 23 for the match. Wells led with 4 of the team 9 team blocks.

Senior Melynne Kessler and Freshman Kendra Schwein were named to the All-Tournament team.

The Broncos will be in action Tuesday, September 15th in Lincoln for conference action against Nebraska Wesleyan University. Game time is 6pm for junior varsity and 7:30 for varsity.

Broncos Win 2 at HC Quality Hotel Classic
Sept. 11 --
The Hastings College volleyball team swept the first day of the Hastings College Quality Hotel Classic, gaining wins over McPherson College 25-19, 25-13, 25-14 and Southern Nazarene University 25-14, 25-22, 27-25. The Broncos take on College of the Ozarks at 11:30 and finish with Bethany College at 7:00.

Against McPherson College, Kendra Schwein had 12 kills, Leah Dostal had 7, and Kelsey Wells had 6. Haley Beardsley and Lindsey Sitorius split the setting responsibilities with 12 and 24 assists. Liz Van Kirk contributed 2 ace serves and 12 digs, while Melynne Kesser led with 28 digs, a season high for the senior libero. Katie Moeller led the team in blocking with 4.

Against the Crimson Storm from SNU, the Broncos relied on the strong hitting of Schwein and Wells, each with 12 kills apiece. Wells hit .600 for the match on 20 swings and no errors. Beardsley set 30 assists with once serving ace. Van Kirk added to her ace total for the day with 3 more in the match. Kessler was once again over 20 digs with 23. The Broncos were strong at the net with 12 team blocks and Allie Mohrman got her hands on 6 of them.

The Hastings College Quality Hotel Classic continues Saturday with the Broncos taking the court at 11:30 against College of the Ozarks, then at 7:00 against Bethany College.

Broncos Start Conference Play With Win Over Warriors
Sept. 11 --
The Hastings College volleyball team defeated Midland Lutheran 27-25, 25-13, 25-20 in their conference opener in Fremont.

Kendra Schwein led the offense once again with 14 kills, while Kelsey Wells had 8, Allie Mohrman and Leah Dostal each had 7 kills to balance the attack. Haley Beardsley and Lindsey Sitorius shared the setting duties with 28 and 14 assists apiece. Liz Van Kirk and Christina Headrick each served 2 aces, while Melynne Kessler dug up 26 attacks. Mohrman and Dostal lead the defense at the net with 3 blocks apiece.

The junior varsity defeated the Warriors in 3 sets to claim their first conference victory of the season. Amanda Francescato led the attack with 9 kills, followed by Jessie Sorensen with 5. Dani Miller set 11 assists with 3 ace serves. Kristen Rubenthaler served 4 aces of her own. The defense was led by Drew Sothers, Amber Himmelberg, and Miller, each with 7 digs apiece. Sorensen led the blockers with 7.

The Broncos host the Hastings College Quality Hotel Classic Friday and Saturday, September 11-12 at the Lynn Farrell Arena and Kiewit Gym on the campus of Hastings College. The Broncos will be in action on Friday at 4:30 against McPherson College and 7:00pm against Southern Nazarene University. On Saturday, the Broncos face College of the Ozarks at 11:30pm and Bethany College at 7:00pm. The junior varsity will take the court on Sunday, September 13 in a double-pool play tournament.

Hastings Wins Two; 4-0 at College of St Mary Tournament
Sept. 5 --
The Hastings College volleyball team won all 4 of their matches at the College of St Mary tournament over the weekend. The Broncos defeated College of St Mary 25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 25-10, then beat Johnson and Wales College 25-13, 25-9, 25-10.

Three Broncos hit for double-digit kills against College of St Mary - Kendra Schwein had 13 kills, Leah Dostal and Katie Moeller had 10 kills apiece. Haley Beardsley and Lindsey Sitorius set for 18 and 27 assists respectively. Liz Van Kirk, Tracia Norblade, and Melynne Kessler each had 2 ace serves. Kessler added 23 digs. Allie Mohrman, Kelsey Wells, and Moeller combined for 16 blocks.

The Broncos finished the tournament with a sweep of first-year program, Johnson and Wales College. The entire team contributed in the win, led by Moeller with 7 kills and Schwein with 6 kills. Beardsley and Sitorius both had 17 assists for the match. Carissa Kinne and Beardsley had 2 ace serves apiece. Kessler had 9 digs, while Mohrman and Moeller had 3 and 2 blocks respectively.
 
The Broncos travel to Fremont on Wednesday, September 9, for their conference opener against Midland Lutheran College. Game time is 6:00 for JV and 7:30 for varsity.

Broncos 2-0 after Day 1 of CSM Tournament
Sept. 4 -- The Hastings College volleyball team started off the College of St Mary Tournament with a 2-0 record. The Broncos defeated Tabor College 25-20, 25-19, 15-25, 25-21. It only took 3 games to sweep Hannibal-LaGrange College 25-17, 25-16, 25-20.

Against Tabor College, the Broncos were led by Kendra Schwein with 12 kills, Allie Mohrman with 9 kills, and Tracia Norblade and Leah Dostal each chipped in 8 kills. Haley Beardsley had 33 assists in the match. Melynne Kessler and Norblade were in double digit kills will 17 and 10 respectively. Kelsey Wells had 6 blocks to stop the Lady Jays.

In the second match of the day, the Broncos took on the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange College. Schwein bettered her kill total with 13, while fellow freshman Kirsten Nickel put down 9 for points. Beardsley had 26 assists to lead the Broncos. Kessler did her part defensively with 16 digs and 2 ace serves. Katie Moeller joined Wells as leading blockers, each with 5 blocks in the match.

Saturday, the Broncos take on host College of St Mary at 2pm, the finish the weekend with Johnson and Wales University at 6pm.

JV Spikers Fall in 5 Sets to NPCC
Sept. 1 --
The Hastings College Junior Varsity volleyball team lost a close match to North Platte Community College. After dropping the first two sets 20-25, 23-25, the Broncos won the next two 25-19, 25-23 to send the match to a 5th set before losing 8-15.

Leading the attack for the Broncos was Sophomore Heidi Daubendiek with 12 kills. She was supported by Juniors Kristen Rubenthaler and Amanda Francescato with 7 kills apiece. The team hit .242 for the match. Senior Dani Miller had 15 assists and freshman Kirsten Pawloski had 14 assists. Miller also served 4 aces. Freshman libero Amber Himmelberg had 27 digs from her back row position, while Rubenthaler had 6 blocks in the front row.  

The Junior Varsity will be back in action this weekend as they travel to the Graceland Tournament in Lamoni, Iowa, on Saturday, then return to Nebraska on Sunday to take part in the Doane College JV Tournament. The squad will split into two teams for both tournaments.

The Hastings College volleyball team will travel to Omaha to play in the College of St Mary Tournament September 4-5. Game times are 2:00 & 6:00 both days. The Junior Varsity will take on North Platte Community College on Wednesday at home, starting at 7pm, then travel to two tournaments over the weekend.

Broncos Sweep Triangular
Aug. 29 --
The Hastings College Broncos volleyball team won two matches in their home opener over Grace University and York College. The Broncos defeated Grace 25-13, 25-12, 25-15 and then defeated York 25-13, 25-14, 25-20.

Against Grace University, the Broncos balanced offensive attack was led by Kendra Schwein with 9, Tracia Norblade with 8, and Leah Dostal, Allie Mohrman, and Kelsey Wells had 7 kills apiece. The Broncos hit .372 as a team. Getting them the ball was Lyndi Rouzee with 27 asssits. She also had 2 service aces, along with Liz Van Kirk. Melynne Kessler dug up 15 balls and Morhman had 6 blocks.

In the second game of the evening, the Broncos took only 3 sets to beat York College. Schwein led with 9 kills, while Dostal chipped in 5. Haley Beardsley stepped in and contributed 30 assists. She also had 2 ace serves. Kessler led once again with 11 digs and 2 ace serves. Van Kirk supported her with 7 digs and 2 ace serves of her own.

The Broncos will take the court again at the College of St Mary Tournament in Omaha, on September 4-5. The Broncos will play Friday at 2pm against Tabor College and 6pm against Hannibal-LaGrange College. On Saturday, the Broncos start at 2pm against host College of St Mary, and then take on Johnson and Wales College at 6pm.

Broncos Win 2 More; Capture Tournament Championship
Aug. 22 -- 
Day two of the Niagara Falls Early Bird Splash started off with a victory for the Hastings College Broncos as they defeated host Daemen College in 4 sets, scores of 25-19, 17-25, 25-19, 25-15. The Broncos finished up the weekend with a sweep of Roberts Weslyan University 25-10, 25-16, 25-10.

The Broncos spread out the offense against Daemen College with Kendra Schwein leading with 8 kills, while Allie Mohrman, Tracia Norblade, Kelsey Wells, and Katie Moeller were directly behind her, all with 7 kills apiece. Moeller was successful on all 7 of her kill attempts for a 1.000 hitting percentage. Getting them the ball was Lyndi Rouzee with 38 assists. Liz Van Kirk and Melynne Kessler covered the back court for 12 and 10 digs respectively. Mohrman had 4 blocks at the net to stop the Wildcats.

Against Roberts Wesleyan, Schwein tallied 14 kills to lead the team, while Leah Dostal followed with 9. Rouzee had 28 assists while getting her hand in 7 blocks and Kessler had 20 digs. Team blocks were at a season high of 11. With the sweep, the Broncos capture the tournament championship and plan to celebrate with a tour of Niagara Falls and dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe this evening.  

Next up for the Broncos is a home triangular with Grace University and York College on Saturday. Game time is 5pm and 7pm at Lynn Farrell Arena.

Broncos Start 2-0 at Niagara Falls Splash
Aug 21-- The 2009 volleyball season for the Hastings College Broncos started off with two wins at the Niagara Falls Early Bird Splash in Buffalo, NY, hosted by Daemen College. The Broncos defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) in four sets, winning 29-27, 12-25, 25-16, 25-18 and then easily handled Notre Dame College (Ohio) in three sets, winning 25-9, 25-9, 25-20. 

Against Mount Vernon Nazarene, sophomore Tracia Norblade and freshman Kendra Schwein lead all hitters with 13 and 12 kills respectively. Senior Lyndi Rouzee dished out 40 assists and 18 digs, while senior Melynne Kessler with 21 digs. Freshman Lindsey Sitorius served 6 aces from the line, while senior Allie Mohrman had 4 blocks at the net. 

Up against Notre Dame College, the Broncos hit an impressive .438 as a team. Leading the offense was Schwein with 11 kills, followed closely by Norblade and sophomore Leah Dostal, each with 8, and junior Kelsey Wells with 7. Rouzee had 4 serving aces to go with her 31 assists. Kessler served 5 aces of her own and 11 digs to lead the defense. 

The Broncos will take on host Daemen College Saturday morning at 9 am EST and will face Roberts Wesleyan College at 2 pm EST to finish the tournament.

Bronco Volleyball Week #1 Preview
Aug 17---
The Hastings College volleyball team will travel to Buffalo, New York, to participate in the Niagara Falls Splash Early Bird Tournament. The Broncos will take on Mt. Vernon Nazarene and Notre Dame College on Friday, August 21 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. EST. On Saturday, the Broncos will face Daemen College at 9 a.m. and Roberts Wesleyan at 2 p.m. EST on Saturday. Two Junior Varsity teams will face Northeastern Junior College and North Platte Community College on Saturday, August 22 in a scrimmage in Sterling, Colorado.

LADY BRONCOS SLATED TO FINISH 5TH IN GPAC PRE-SEASON COACHES POLLAug. 13---The Bronco Volleyball team is slated to finish 5th in the 2009 GPAC season, according to the Pre-Season Coaches’ Poll recently released by the conference office. Hastings, which finished the 2008 season at 30-9 and 5th place in the conference race, is picked to finish the 2009 campaign behind Northwestern College, Morningside College, Dordt College, and Doane College respectively.
The race for the GPAC Championship looks to be a close one with Northwestern receiving 142 points with ten 1st place votes, Morningside with 133 points and three 1st place points, Dordt with 114 points, Doane with 107 points and the final first place vote, and Hastings with 100 points. The Broncos open the season August 21 at the Niagara Falls Splash Early Bird Tournament, hosted by Daemen College in Buffalo, New York.
The 2009 GPAC volleyball season will once again consist of 16 conference matches with 13 teams competing for the conference crown.  Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team in the preseason poll.

JILL WHALEN NAMED 2008 NAIA ALL-AMERICA HONORABLE-MENTION
Dec. 8---
The NAIA has announced the 2008 All-America teams for volleyball as selected by a committee.  Jill Whalen has been named to the honorable-mention list.  Whalen led the Lady Broncos with 358 kills and a hitting efficiency of .231.  She also added 26 service aces, 442 digs and 93 blocks.  Whalen is the 14th All-American for Hastings College volleyball and the first since Celeste Bauer was named honorable-mention in 2006.



2008 VOLLEYBALL ALL-REGION TEAMS ANNOUNCED BY AVCA
Dec. 8---
The American Volleyball Coaches Association has announced the 2008 NAIA All-Region Teams.  Bronco volleyball players Jill Whalen and Alyssa Montgomery were named to the teams.  Whalen, a senior outside hitter from Gregory, S.D. was named to the 1st team while Montgomery a senior from Superior, Neb. received honorable-mention as a middle hitter. 



HASTINGS COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL PLACES FOUR ON GPAC ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS/MELYNNE KESSLER NAMED GPAC LIBERO-OF-THE-YEAR
Nov. 19---
The Hastings College volleyball team has placed four individuals on the GPAC All-Conference teams.  Senior Jill Whalen, from Gregory, S.D. and senior Alyssa Montgomery from Guide Rock, Neb. have been named 1st team All-Conference for their efforts this season.  Whalen is a repeat selection from a year ago while Montgomery was named 1st team in 2006.  Junior Melynne Kessler from Bellevue, Neb. has been named GPAC Libero-of-the-year as well as being named 2nd team All-Conference.  Senior Kelsey Hansen from Omaha, Neb. was named GPAC Honorable-Mention as she is the fourth Lady Bronco to be named to the All-Conference teams.  Hastings finished 30-9 on the season and 11-5 in the conference.
