BRONCOS FALL IN FIRST ROUND Nov. 21--Thirteenth ranked Hastings College was defeated by a score of 40-34 by #5 ranked Ottawa Universiy today in Ottawa, Kansas. The Broncos led 27-6 at half and had a 34-6 lead in the thrid period. But the nation's top-ranked Brave offense kicked into gear. Capitalizing on some big plays, and a couple of Bronco miscues, the Braves took a 40-34 lead with six minutes to play.
The Broncos then marched down the field to inside the Ottawa 10 yard line. But an interception with 2 minutes to go ended the threat and sealed the win for the Braves.
Offensively, QB Troy Huebert was 16 of 23 passing for 186 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game with an injury in the third quarter. RB Nick Grummert rushed for 144 yards and 3 touchdowns. Defensively, the Broncos picked off 4 Brave passes, two by DB Aaron Chochon.
Hastings ends the season 9-3. They finished 8-2 in the GPAC, good for third place.

BRONCOS QUALIFY FOR THE NATIONAL PLAYOFFS Nov. 15--After finishing up the season 9-2, the Broncos found out today that they will have a second season. The Broncos officially have qualified for the national playoffs and will play at Ottawa next Saturday at 4:00 pm. The rest of the pairings include Minot @ USF, Dickinson St @ Carroll, Langston @ Lindenwood, McKendree @ St. Xavier, Cumberlands @ Lambuth, Missouri Valley @ Morningside, and McPherson @ MidAmerica Nazarene.
The Broncos jumped 3 spots to number 13 in the final regular season NAIA poll after defeating Midland Saturday. Ottawa is ranked number 5 nationally.

BRONCOS DOWN MIDLAND IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE Nov. 14--Hastings College jumped to an early lead and then used a stingy defense and a few big plays to hold on for a 27-14 for Midland Lutheran College. After taking a 10-0 first quarter lead, Maurice Mansfield broke loose for a 70 yard touchdown run midway through the 2nd quarter. Midland then got on the board with a Derr Middleton 5 yard scoring run. Hastings had a chance to increase their lead before half, but a fumble inside the Midland 10 yard line ended the threat.
After a scoreless 3rd quarter, Midland closed the gap to 3 with a 9 play drive capped by an Eric Hart 1 yard touchdown. But Mansfield took the ensuing kickoff 78 yards for a score to put the Broncos back up by 10. A 32 yard Ernsesto Lacayo field goal capped the scoring.
Mansfield finished with 125 yards rushing on 20 carries and the one touchdown. Senior receiver Ryan Sack chipped in with 5 catches for 66 yards.
Defensively, the Broncos forced 6 Midland turnovers led by cornerback Jeff Klug's 2 interceptions. Linebacker Tyson Buresh and cornerback Aaron Chochon both had an interception and a fumble recovery. Linebacker Mackenzie Hemje led in total tackles with 12.
With the win, Hastings finishes the regular season 9-2 and finishes 3rd place in the GPAC with an 8-2 conference record. They will have to wait until tomorrow afternoon to see whether their season will continue with a national playoff invitation.

BIG THIRD QUARTER LIFTS BRONCOS Nov. 7--Hastings College started slow but used some big plays and a big third quarter to defeat Concordia today in Seward 28-18.
The Bulldogs struck early, following an interception with a 42 yard drive capped by a 1 yard touchdown sneak by Kyle Schmidt. The point after attempt was blocked. Concordia scored again midway through the second quarter on a 52 yard run by Rett Miller. A two point conversion rush failed.
The Broncos finally got it going with 1:35 left in the half. With Concordia driving once again, linebacker Mackenzie Hemje intercepted a screen pass and raced 85 yards for a touchdown to make the score 12-7 at half.
To start the second half, the Broncos forced a Bulldog turnover and capitalized with a 40 yard touchdown pass from Troy Huebert to Justin Anderson. Two plays later, Hastings cornerback Jeff Klug picked off a Bulldog pass and raced 54 yards for a score. After the defense forced a three and out, the Broncos got their third touchdown in less than three minutes. Maurice Mansfield broke loose for a 48 yard touchdown run, breaking several tackles in the process.
Concordia wasn't done. Schmidt hit Jamarcus Walker for an 81 yard touchdown pass with 9:39 left in the fourth, but the two point conversion failed and the Broncos were able to hang on for the 28-18 win.
Hastings moves to 8-2 on the year with the win, 7-2 in GPAC play. The Broncos will host Midland next Saturday at 1:00 pm.

Several members of the Bronco football team recently visited Engleman Elementary School in Grand Island where they spent the morning reading to and visiting with students. This is the second year the Broncos have participated in this fun experience at Engleman.

Nov. 2—Despite an off week, the Hastings College Broncos have climbed two more spots to number 17 in this week's NAIA poll. GPAC foes Sioux Falls and Morningside remain at number 1 and 4 respectively. Northwestern, who is currently tied for third with Hastings in the GPAC standings, dropped to number 18 following their loss to Sioux Falls on Saturday.

Oct. 26—Tonight's JV game versus Iowa Western will be held at Wilson Jr. High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The address is 715 N. 21st Street. Game time is 6:00 pm.
Oct. 24—Hastings used one of their best performances of the season to down Dana College 38-7 today in Hastings. Playing with 3rd string quarterback Brett Stine, the Broncos racked up 300 yards against the Vikings, while the defense gave up only 119 total yards, including minus 33 yards on the ground.
Maurice Mansfield had a big day for Hastings, scoring on a 46 yard run early in the second quarter and hauling in a 65 yard scoring pass from Stine early in the third. Stine was 8 for 10 passing with one touchdown. He also rushed for 69 yards and a score.
Defensively, a number of Broncos shined. Nose tackle Pete Botkin led the team in tackles with 9, and had a sack. End Jake Mueller had 2 sacks to go with 6 tackles, linebacker Mackenzie Hemje had two interceptions and a sack and freshman end John Melies recovered a fumble for a touchdown and had a sack. Overall, the Bronco defense forced 5 turnovers and had 6 sacks against the Dana offense.
Hastings (7-2, 6-2) is off next Saturday. They will travel to Seward on November 7th to face Concordia.

Oct. 17—In a battle of defenses, Hastings College was able to hang on for a 7-3 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan today in Lincoln. Hastings got on the board in the first quarter when quarterback Justin Barry hit Maurice Mansfield for a 43 yard touchdown pass.
That proved to be all the Broncos would need as the defense was able to keep Wesleyan out of the end zone all day. Linebacker Mackenzie Hemje led the effort with 14 total tackles for the game. Cornerback Brinson Steinhauser, a Lincoln native, sealed the game when he intercepted a Wesleyan pass in the end zone with 1:54 to play. From there, the Broncos were able to run the clock out.
Barry, who was filling in for the injured Troy Huebert, was injured himself late in the third quarter. Third string quarterback Brett Stine was at the helm of the Bronco offense during the fourth quarter.
Hastings is now 6-2 on the year (5-2 in GPAC). They will host Dana College next Saturday. Game time is 1:00 pm.

Oct. 15—Fifteen Preschoolers from St. Michael’s elementary school came to Hastings College today to visit the Bronco football program up close and personal. In addition to meeting Bronco players and coaches, teacher Dana Fanning’s class was able to do a number of other fun things such as tour the facilities, try on equipment, go through drills and an obstacle course, get Bronco tattoos, and meet “Bandit” the Bronco mascot!
Oct. 12—The JV game against Concordia scheduled for today has been moved to next Monday, October 19th. Game time is still 7:00 pm.
Oct. 10—With a dominating performance on both sides of the ball, Morningside College defeated Hastings today by a score of 46-0. Jake Peterson led the way for the Mustangs with 203 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Receiver Beau Kildow also caught two touchdown passes from Tim Richard.
Morningside dominated the game statistically as well, outyarding the Broncos 521-125.
Hastings, now 5-2 (4-2 in GPAC play) travels to Lincoln next week to take on Nebraska Wesleyan. Game time is 1:00 pm.

Oct. 3—Hastings College improved to 5-1 today with a 27-3 victory over Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Broncos could only manage an Ernesto Lacayo 23 yard field goal in the first period but got to the end zone twice in the second with a 6 yard run by Maurice Mansfield and a 5 yard touchdown pass from Troy Huebert to tight end Calvin Pettigrew.
The two teams traded field goals in the third period before Huebert made a 25 yard touchdown run late in the third for the game's final score.
Huebert was 9 for 16 passing for 134 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed the ball 13 times for 90 yards and a score. Defensively, the Broncos were led by linebacker Brian Callan who had 7 total tackles, two for loss.
The Broncos will host #5 Morningside next Saturday at Lloyd Wilson field. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm.

Lacayo Mansfield Sept. 28—Hastings College has two players honored this week for their performance in Saturday's 36-14 homecoming win over Dakota Wesleyan.
Senior RB/WR Maurice Mansfield has been named GPAC/Hauff's Offensive Player of the Week and junior K/P Ernesto Lacayo has been named Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Sept. 28—Hastings College has moved up two spots to #17 in this week’s NAIA football coaches poll after defeating Dakota Wesleyan 36-14 this past weekend. The Broncos (4-1, 3-1 in the GPAC) travel to Sioux Center, Iowa this week to play Dordt College. Other GPAC schools in the top 25 include #1 Sioux Falls, #5 Morningside and #15 Northwestern Iowa.

Sept. 26—Maurice Mansfield rushed for 233 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead #19 Hastings College to a 36-14 victory over Dakaota Wesleyan University.
Hastings used the passing game to jump to a 14-0 first quarter lead. Quarterback Troy Huebert hit tight end Blake Horstmann for a 10 yard score and receiver Ryan Sack hauled in a 64 yard Huebert touchdown pass at the end of the first quarter.
After a 21 yard Ernesto Lacayo field goal made the score 17-0, Dakota Wesleyan got on the board late in the half with an 18 yard pass from Jon Doom to Jesse Ayers. But the Broncos weren't done. After Brinson Steinhauser returned the ensuing kickoff to the Hastings 44, Mansfield ripped off a 21 yard run to the Wesleyan 35. Lacayo then made a 52 yard field goal as time ran out in the half.
The Bronco defense continued to play tough in the second half against the GPAC's top rated passing offense, shutting them out in the third quarter. Meanwhile, the Broncos scored on a safety and a 2 yard Mansfield run in the third to take a 29-7 lead. With 5:53 to go in the game, the Tigers scored on a Russell McGuire 6 yard run, but Mansfield answered on the following drive with a 4 yard run to put the game away for Hastings.
Hastings (4-1, 3-1 in GPAC) travels to Dordt next week while Dakota Wesleyan (1-3) hosts Midland.

Sept. 21—The JV game between Hastings College and Kansas Wesleyan scheduled for today has been moved to Hastings due to the weather. Kickoff is at 6:00 pm at Lloyd Wilson Field.
Sept. 19—Sioux Falls used a 28 point 2nd quarter on their way to a 42-19 win over Hastings College. Leading 7-0 after the first quarter, the Cougars struck with two touchdown passes from Lorenzo Brown to Jon Ryan to open the 2nd. Hastings then struck back with a 41 yard scoring strike from Troy Huebert to Maurice Mansfield. But Sioux Falls answered with a Brown 8 yard run and, minutes later, returned a blocked punt for a score.
After Mansfield's touchdown return of the second half kickoff was nullified by a penalty, Sioux Falls put the game on ice with pass from Brown to Scott LeBrun. Blake Horstmann caught a Huebert pass from 16 yards for a score late in the 3rd quarter and Ernesto Lacayo added a 43 yard field goal early in the fourth.
The Broncos were able to rack up 292 total yards and 17 points against the nation's top defense, but could only manage 13 yards on the ground.
Mansfield finished the day with 7 catches for 129 yards and one touchdown. Huebert was 19 of 37 passing for 260 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Broncos, now 3-1, host Dakota Wesleyan next Saturday for homecoming. Kickoff is at 2:00 pm at Lloyd Wilson Field.

Sept. 14—The Hastings College Bronco Football team, now 3-0 following a 31-20 win over Briar Cliff this weekend, is ranked No. 19 in this week's NAIA national poll.This is the first appearance in the rankings for the Broncos since October 1, 2007.
Sioux Falls, this week's opponent for the Broncos, remains at No. 1. Other ranked GPAC schools are: Morningside (5), Northwestern (T22) and Nebraska Wesleyan (25).

Sept. 12—Hastings College used a strong second half performance to down a stubborn Briar Cliff team 31-20. Hastings capitalized on turnovers early in the game to take a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but Briar Cliff scored on a 31 yard pass play from Ryan Hajek to Chase Colvin in the second quarter to pull within 10-7 at half.
The Bronco offense capitalized on another turnover in the third quarter with a 10 yard touchdown pass from Troy Huebert to Michael Novicki. Fullback Zack Batey capped a 72 yard drive with a 9 yard run with 7:41 left in the game to give Hastings a 24-7 lead. After a Charger touchdown, Maurice Mansfield answered with a 40 run with 2:54 remaining to clinch the win. Briar Cliff scored on the game's final play to make the final score 31-20.
Offensively for the Broncos, Mansfield ended with 138 yards rushing on 30 carries and had one touchdown. Linebacker Mackenzie Hemje led the defense with 13 tackles and a forced fumble.
Hastings, now 3-0, will be on the road next week to take on top-ranked Sioux Falls. Game time is 1:00 pm.

Lacayo Sept. 7—Hastings College punter/kicker Ernesto Lacayo is this week's GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Special Teams Player-of-the-Week. Lacayo, a junior from Hayward, California, had a big special teams day on Saturday as the Broncos defeated Doane 34-10 in Crete, Nebraska. For the game he totaled seven kickoffs for 432 yards and five punts for 217 yards including a long of 59 yards that was downed at the one yard line. He also made all four PAT attempts and was 2-3 on field goals with a long of 42 yards. Hastings is now 2-0 and will host Briar Cliff next Saturday in a 1PM kickoff at Lloyd Wilson Field.

September 5—Crete, Neb. - Hastings College used a strong running attack and a stingy defense to down Doane College in Crete, by a score of 34-10. The Broncos led 14-3 at half and then blew the game open in the third quarter by capitalizing on Doane mistakes. Cornerback Jeff Klug intercepted a Doane pass and returned it for a score, and on the ensuing possession, safety Mike Cardenas picked one off and returned it inside the Doane 5. Nick Grummert scored to make it 31-3. In the fourth quarter, Ernesto Lacayo added his second field goal of the day for the final score.
The Broncos dominated statistically as well, out yarding the Tigers 344-205, including a 255-11 advantage on the ground. Grummert finished the day with 121 yards rushing and a touchdown. Receiver Justin Anderson had 3 catches for 23 yards and a touchdown.
Hastings will host Briar Cliff next Saturday at 1:00 at Lloyd Wilson Field.

August 27—Hastings, Neb. - Hastings used the big play to down Peru State 38-18 before a packed crowd at Lloyd Wilson Field. Peru scored first, but the Broncos answered with two long touchdown passes from Troy Huebert, one to Justin Anderson for 45 yards and the other a 62 yarder to Maurice Mansfield. Huebert also chipped in with a 28 yard scoring run to help the Broncos take a 24-12 halftime lead. The Broncos got another touchdown pass from Huebert and a 1 yard scoring run from Nick Grummert, set up by a 41 yard Huebert to Anderson pass, in the second half to seal the win. The Broncos will travel to Doane College on Saturday, September 5th. Kickoff is at 1:00 pm.

Senior receiver Ryan Sack and senior safety Mike Cardenas have been elected team captains for the 2009 season. They join senior receiver Maurice Mansfield and senior lineback Mackenzie Hemje who were elected in the spring.
Hastings College will officially open the 2009 campaign on Wednesday, August 12, when all newcomers report to campus. Veteran players will report a day later and then the Broncos will be in camp preparing for their opener against Peru State on Thursday, August 27, at Lloyd Wilson Field.
The GPAC coaches met in Sioux City, Iowa on Tuesday, August 4, for the annual pre-season press conference. In the pre-season poll of the coaches, Hastings was selected 5th.
