Hastings College

Pursue Your Passion.

Welcome to the Hastings College website!

Dr. Dudley at deskI hope you are enjoying your on-line visit. Our website offers a wealth of information about our campus and programs. Of course, even the most informative website cannot duplicate what you will experience during a campus visit. If you haven't been to Hastings College, I encourage you to call our admissions office and arrange to spend a day with us. You will discover:
  • A National Liberal Arts College widely respected for the quality of its faculty and academic programs.
  • A vibrant, friendly campus where people work together in a spirit of collegiality and mutual respect.
  • Professors who challenge you, enlighten you, and inspire you to succeed.
  • A rich variety of student organizations ranging from athletics to the fine arts.
  • A beautiful campus that blends historic landmarks with modern academic buildings.
My spouse Donna and I have been privileged to be associated with Hastings College for the past 37 years. I joined the college as a Professor in the economics department in 1973, became Vice President in 1979, and have served as President of the College since 2000. Our sons Phil, Peter, and Paul, as well as daughters-in-law Sandy and Stefanie, graduated from this institution. Hastings College holds a special place in our lives, both personally and professionally. As you consider which college or university is best for you, your decision will be much easier if you focus on what makes a college truly exceptional: high academic standards, opportunities to engage with your peers and the world, and, most of all, superior teaching and learning.

What makes Hastings College an exceptional learning community?

We keep our focus on great classroom teaching, and we put only the best teachers at the front of the classroom. Three of our professors have been named Nebraska Professor of the Year. Our student-to-faculty ratio is 12:1, which means you will work one-on-one with professors from some of the top graduate programs in the country (Harvard, Vanderbilt, Purdue, Brown, Berkeley, Cal Tech, Notre Dame, and Rice, to name a few). An impressive 85% of our classes are taught by full-time faculty, and the other 15% are taught by qualified instructors who bring expertise to the subject matter. Eighty-six percent of tenured or tenure-track professors have doctorates or the highest degree in their fields. We encourage our professors to publish and do research, but believe classroom teaching is the most important of their endeavors. At Hastings College, you will spend four years working with amazing professors and developing a passion for learning that lasts a lifetime.

Surveys consistently demonstrate that Hastings College students are highly satisfied with the quality of their experiences. For example, in the Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory, our students express greater satisfaction, at the highest statistically significant level, than do students from a national comparison group on 70 of 73 items, including the following 10 items rated most important by our students:

  • The instruction in my major field is excellent.

  • My academic advisor is knowledgeable about requirements in my major.

  • The content of courses within my major is valuable.

  • Nearly all of the faculty are knowledgeable in their field.

  • My academic advisor is approachable.

  • The quality of instruction I receive in most of my classes is excellent.

  • Tuition paid is a worthwhile investment.

  • It is an enjoyable experience to be a student on this campus.

  • There is a commitment to academic excellence on this campus.

  • I am able to register for classes I need with few conflicts.

All first-year students and seniors were invited to complete the National Survey of Student Engagement, which measures the quality of students’ experiences in and out of the classroom. Students gave us high marks on the following:

  • Campus provides the support you need to help you succeed academically.
  • Campus helps you cope with your non-academic responsibilities (work, family, etc.).
  • Campus provides the support you need to thrive socially.
  • Quality of relationships with other students. Quality of relationships with faculty members.
  • Quality of relationships with administrative personnel and offices.

Dr. Dudley with HC studentsIn addition to remarkable learning experiences in the classroom, Hastings College offers dozens of opportunities to become involved in athletics, the fine arts, and religious, leadership, and academic organizations. We also encourage you to expand your boundaries and explore the world. During the January Term, you can take innovative courses on campus or travel far and wide learning about different cultures, ecosystems, and ideas.

Through our study-abroad programs, you can spend a semester at an international university in Ireland, England, Spain, or Russia, among several other countries. Or, you may choose to join the growing number of Hastings College students who serve others and work for social justice in locales ranging from Guatemala and the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast to homeless shelters, daycares, and schools. Hastings College was recently named, with distinction, to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, a national award that recognizes the exemplary service work of our students.

Once you visit campus, I think you will agree that Hastings College is an amazing and enlightening place, a place where you can discover your skills and passions, and forge those qualities into a life of productivity and purpose. No matter what path you take, your Hastings College education will serve you well.

I look forward to seeing you at Hastings College!
