The governing principle which underlies campus life at Hastings College is the maximum amount of individual freedom commensurate with responsible living. To aid in achieving this objective, Hastings College shares its responsibility of governance with the entire campus community. The Student Association assumes this responsibility on behalf of the students.
The Student Association seeks to represent and govern the students and to promote the academic, social, cultural and spiritual life of the campus. Governing responsibilities of the S.A. are divided into two categories: legislative responsibilities, which are handled by the Executive Council and the Student Senate, and the judicial responsibilities, which are addressed by the Student Judiciary Council. The Executive Council is the primary governing body, dealing with all student government matters except budget appropriations. This council is composed of executive officers, standing executive committee chairpersons and one to three members of the faculty or administration.
The Student Senate's primary responsibilities are to make appropriations of S.A. funds, to approve S.A. presidential appointments, to ratify changes in the S.A. constitution or by-laws and to present to the Executive Council the ideas, needs and desires of the students that it represents. Membership in the Student Senate includes two members from each of the five academic areas as well as one member from each of the following areas: financial aid, off-campus, non-traditional, Mary Lanning, and Student Affairs. The Senate also includes one member from each residence hall as well as the vice president and secretary of the Executive Council.
