What You Can Do

Recycle
Hastings College accepts:
- Plastics 1-8
- Cardboard (No Pizza boxes)
- Aluminum Cans
- Steel Cans
- Newspaper (including magazines)
- Office Paper (not anything shiny)
Bottled Water
Instead of continuously buying bottled water, buy a reusable water bottle and a Brita water pitcher to put in your fridge. It is easier on the earth and on your wallet! Make a pledge to use less bottled water and get a $5 coupon for a Brita water pitcher at their website: http://www.filterforgood.com.
Paper/Plastic
- Buy recycled paper products.
- Use cloth or paper shopping bags. Reuse plastic bags or donate them to thrift stores.
- Recycle inserts and advertisements with newspaper.
- Print double sided and only what you need. Use the blank side of printed paper for lists and notes.
- Recycle your paper after you have used both sides.
- Wash and reuse aluminum foil and plastic food bags.
- Discard caps from plastic bottles before recycling.
- Be creative: Wrap birthday and Christmas presents with grocery bags, newspaper, office paper, or fabric!
Energy
- Use compact fluorescent bulbs
- Turn your lights off when you leave a room
- Consider using alternative lighting, such as a lamp
- Unplug electronics when not in use.
- Plug things into a power strip and shut the entire power strip off when you leave a room. This prevents phantom energy; energy leached from an outlet when something (ex. cell phone charger) isn’t being used.
- Put electronics into sleep mode
Going Out
- Take a mug with you to the coffee shop and get a discount! Avoid disposable cups.
- Take Tupperware with you when you go out to eat so you don’t have to take home leftovers in a Styrofoam container.
- Make a habit of taking your reusable grocery bags with you to the grocery store.
- Buy food produced near home—shop the farmer’s market.
- Use person versus car power! Ride your bike or walk to get to work or school. Downtown is only one mile away from campus. Have you checked out your Bronco Bike yet? Email Ashton Lambie for more information.
- Shop thrift stores and garage sales. Donate usable items to thrift and consignment stores.
- Carpool with friends when going shopping. It’s more fun!
