Hastings College marked the beginning of a new era in science with the Morrison-Reeves Science Center Dedication and Open House on Thursday, Oct. 1.
The Science Center is named in honor of Mr. Kenneth Morrison and Dr. Thomas Reeves. Morrison is a long-time Hastings resident and was a Hastings College trustee from 1981 to 1999. He remains an honorary trustee of the college. Dr. Reeves was president of Hastings College from 1985 to 1995, and he was instrumental to the growth of the college and the implementation of several long-lasting and beneficial college programs during that time.
Building History
A committee composed of science faculty, administrators and students worked with Omaha-based architectural firm RDG Planning & Design to help gather data on facility needs and the needs of faculty and students. Final building designs were unveiled in February of 2007, and Kiewit Construction, Inc., of Omaha was chosen as general contractor for the project.
Groundbreaking for the Morrison-Reeves Science Center took place in April 2007, and, thanks to the efforts of so many Hastings College friends and community, the center welcomed its first students this year when classes began on Monday, Aug. 31, 2009.
The state-of-the-art Morrison-Reeves Science Center offers students more laboratory and research space and includes classrooms and offices for the departments of biology, physics, chemistry and psychology. The Center was created with an interactive and interdisciplinary design that aims to celebrate science and engage students and faculty in scientific discovery and collaboration.
Nearly 25 percent of Hastings College students declare a major in the sciences. In addition, all students take at least one science course as part of the college’s Liberal Arts Program of required courses.
