Landscaping around the environmentally friendly Morris-Reeves Science Center (completed in 2010) is designed to be a biologically-diverse outdoor classroom that showcases sustainable landscape practices.
Tall-growing deciduous trees have been planted to shade the building and aid summer cooling, while large canopy trees are placed to provide shade for pedestrians and paved surfaces.
The rain gardens near the building help improve the quality of run-off water; incorporate native plants such as goldenrod, coneflower, viburnum, and native grasses, the gardens provide a beautiful and sustainable landscape.
The large, open area to the south of the building has become a mini-prairie, planted with native grasses such as big bluestem, little bluestem, switch grass and buffalo grass, that require little water or maintenance. | ![]() ![]() ![]() |
