Community Involvement

The Hastings College Forensics Team is actively involved in our local community! On our campus, team members consistently perform as examples in classes like Fundamentals of Public Speaking and Argumentation & Debate. In addition, team members tutor students in Principles of Human Communication and Speaking & Writing.
Team members are also involved in many peer organizations on campus. They use their speaking skills to help educate others about rape prevention, HIV, alcohol awareness, and tolerance. The Alliance group (who promote and educate about tolerance and acceptance of students of all sexual orientations) even won Outstanding Programming for the Day of Silence at the BACCHUS General Assembly in November 2004.
The team also participated in the 2004-2012 Nebraska AIDS Walks. The forensic students are diehards as the walks occur right after the two day long forensic retreats. The team continues to raise money for the Nebraska AIDS Project. The team also participates in the Trick-or-Treat for cans annual Halloween event. The team gathers can good donations from the community to give to the Nebraska AIDS Project food pantry.
Members also perform for local groups, like the Hastings Optimists Club, the Hastings Professional Women's Organization and Kiwanis. The team has also helped with events at the Stuhr Museum, the Hastings Historical Society, and the Children's Museum of Central Nebraska.
A few team members even volunteer at local high school speech teams, coaching students for high school competitions. The Kevin Heineman Memorial High School Tournament provides students with the opportunity to donate their time to judge area high schools in speech.
